JD just signed with the A's for $2.5 million with $1 million in incentives.
Also, ex-Giant Haniger is hitting .450 with 3 homers so far. Haniger also expressed that he was not comfortable as a Giant even though he is from the Bay Area. I'm not sure if he meant Kapler, Zaidi, or both.

The only place Haniger is comfortable is on the DL.

I'm in agreement with Reed here. Not that I disagree with you, boagie, but there was SOMETHING going on with A LOT of our players during the Kapler/Farhan fiasco.
1/2 of that fiasco is still in place.
And THAT will continue to be an issue based upon his handling of JD and how the players reacted.

I believe Haniger was one of those who hit a home run then got pulled for a platoon PH the next time up. Haniger is a borderline good player and they should have gotten better then .209 out of him. I think the handling of Haniger was on Kapler and I think good ball players need to get into a groove. It’s harder to get in a zone when you are always afraid of getting pulled. Haniger was not brought in to be a role player but he was paid big FA money. At that price, he should have been an every day player when not injured.

Reed, you nailed it!
Kapler was so into that platoon nonsense... an outgrowth of the metrics he lived by, that the player(s) got hosed!
Mitch deserved better.

After he came back from the injury in late August, he only played about a dozen full games. He got $8 million in 2023 and getting $20 million in 2024. The money they paid out is not at platoon level, it is the level that an everyday player would get. I realize he wasn't hitting well at the end but basically, in late August and September, it was the equivalent of him starting spring training. I am glad they were able to trade him away but I think his play was subpar because of the way Kapler used him. It is all there on the game logs.
Boagie mentioned when they initially got Haniger that Haniger is a pro that kept getting freak injuries. I think this is another player that got hosed a bit by the Zaidi-Kapler system and should have a bounce back year in Seattle. Also, this is another player whose exit was not handled well. Its a not a problem to get rid of toxic personalities but I'm getting concerned that a lot of good team players are not receiving any communication from management and get tossed aside almost casually.

So they signed Snell for a one and one. Boras and Snell just blew $90 million because they turned down $150 million from the Yankees. I'm not sure of the logistics but I think if I were Snell, I would have taken the guaranteed $150 million so this is a loss for Boras.
Actually, this is a good deal for the Giants. It minimizes their long term commitment and can act as a bridge to next season when the young pitching gets more experience. If Cobb comes back soon, the rotation would be Webb-Snell-Cobb-Harrison-Hicks (or Winn) and slots Harrison into a more comfortable role. Also, this is a second lefty to counter the Dodgers. Now the depth of the rotation makes the Giants a team other teams would not like to face in short playoff series.
Sportswriters are gushing over the job Zaidi did. After five years of the flailing around, I will reserve judgement on Zaidi. My feeling is that the team is improved but the work is not quite done. If the goal was to get pitching and defense, I guess this is close to the desired outcome. Snell cost them the third round draft pick and another $500000 in international bonus pool money. Third round draft picks usually don't make it so that is not considered a loss but the loss of bonus pool money is a blow. I still do not like the idea of Conforto out in LF and I think they need to shore up lefthanded relief. Unfortunately, I think this means Zaidi did enough to save his job for a while.

I like the deal for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that a Boras client got hosed by Boras!
And this is not the first guy to get shafted by this agent.
I also like the deal because of the money we DIDN'T pay out.
We stay healthy we now have a legit shot at the playoffs.

Earlier, we were talking about Snell's walks as a concern. Supposedly, his walks are part of his game plan. Greg Papa was saying that Snell is a pitcher who likes to nibble and will not give in on counts. When he falls behind hitters, he will continue to nibble and not come in. His game plan is to give up the walk but not hard contact. While BB/9 was the highest in the game, h/9 and K/9 were among the best. With Patrick Bailey's skills at pitch framing, he might have found the perfect battery-mate. Also, this shows that Snell is a pitcher with a plan and this is good to rub off on young pitchers like Harrison.
Webb is the opposite of Snell because he pitches to contact. Kind of a neat contrast.

That is great to hear! That it's part of his plan.
thing is, Harrison is reporting that while he was in HS, Blake talked to him.
When asked for advice, Snell said: "Just throw strikes."

Krukow said that the problem area of Snell's game is mechanics. If he gets out of sync, his shoulder drops and the whole delivery gets out of whack. He is a tall guy but with Price on board, he should be okay. Maybe he can impart some wisdom to Hjelle.

On whenthegiantscometotown, one blogger said that if Luciano is the SS, that might mean that Putila is more in charge because he favors the youth. If Ahmed is the starting SS, that would mean Zaidi is in charge. If its 50-50, it will be whomever Melvin chooses.

Huh.
I never even considered EITHER of those, Reed, and honestly, IF either is in charge of whom Melvin plays, Melvin is an idiot to listen.
Me?
The first time the GM tells me who HAS to play, I do 2 things.
1-I tell him, give me orders again and I walk.
Melvin doesn't need the game so badly he has to compromise his integrity.
Also, with all his years, he doesn't need the money.
And finally, there are a TON of teams that would love to hire him. Getting a job wouldn't be an issue unless the whole league colluded, as the Obiden team is doing against Trump
2-He says no, it goes in the press and in detail what they are doing.
That nonsense has no business in the game.
The manager manages, the GM, well...he... um... GM's
What is being suggested in the blog is what we saw in Mr. Baseball, when ownership tells the coach who plays.
I guess the bottom line is, I don't take that stuff lying down. If I did, if I had to compromise my values and beliefs away, I couldn't look at myself in the mirror.

I don't think Melvin is that guy, Boly. I hope he proves me wrong, but I doubt he will. He was a yes man with the A's, and just last year he allowed the Padres to act very foolish on the field. Maybe he will mature as a manager, but it certainly hasn't happened yet.

According to an interview with John Shea last month, the word is "the manager will manage".
Bob Melvin quote: “Look,” Melvin told the Chronicle’s John Shea, “my experiences with Farhan are, I have opinions, he has opinions, and we talk about it and try to find the best place.”
What is debatable is where the "best place" is. When they were all at Oakland, Beane called the shots, Zaidi was the numbers cruncher, and Melvin went along. If they start to move away from the use of openers or strict platooning, maybe it would indicate Melvin is calling the shots. The last year with San Diego was a huge red flag to me and with all those all stars he had in the lineup and rotation, he should have made the playoffs and the team imploded under his watch.
Shea did point out that if Zaidi wanted a true "yes man", he would have hired Vogt because there would be less pushback with an inexperienced manager.

When you're first starting, you need to keep for no other reason. Then financial. But with the money that melvin has made I can't believe he has a financial problem That being the case but I believe someone falls back on is honesty and integrity and honor. And if you're bending over and taking it up the wazzu by management that's not honorable

That many eagles percolating in one Clubhouse.I think dooms the team. I don't think Bob was the problem.I think it was there before he got there and nothing could fix that short of getting rid of the players

Melvin and the Padres did beat the Dodgers in the playoffs in 2022 but regressed in 2023. Whatever he did worked in 22 and the main changes in 23 were the return of Tatis and Machado's injury. Melvin will probably not say what happened but it was pretty obvious that he and Preller did not get along well enough to find a "best place" and maybe the return of Tatis upset the apple cart.

If Ahmed is the starting SS, that would mean Zaidi is in charge. If its 50-50, it will be whomever Melvin chooses. Ahmed appears to have cooled down while Luciano has been heating up. Luciano has hit .409 since March 13 and if they have to choose Ahmed, they will have to place him on the 40 man roster and he does not play 2B. Fitzgerald does play 2B. Unless they feel Ahmed is that much better than Luciano, it would make sense to go with Luciano-Fitzgerald and get rid of Ahmed for roster purposes. Similar thing is happening at catcher. Bailey has not played much since the hand injury and Murphy has been hot. Maybe they put Bailey on the IL or AAA and keep Bart but Murphy seems like the starter.

Too many unknowns for me this late in spring.
Slater, now Bailey and Ahmed.
The most disturbing for me is Bailey's hand.
Now maybe they are just being cautious, and I'm fine with that.
I never wanted Ahmed at all, and I was sorry to see we signed the guy.
I'm with you, Reed. Fitz and Luciano.
I'd rather Fitz's speed than a SS who can only play SS

The third opening is outfield. Slater probably not ready to go and Yastrzemski's wife is about to have a child so this opens a spot for Matos and I'm thinking Fitzgerald. As I mentioned before, I think all the injuries on the team and especially in the outfield are something they almost fully expect.
I think Bailey should take all the time he needs on IL and AAA to get himself right. In the meantime, they can build up Bart's trade value.

Post by reedonly on Mar 27, 2024 9:17:51 GMT -5
They are not saying how bad Bailey's hand injury is but he did not get many ABs in the past couple of weeks and not hitting well. I think they want more time to deal with the Joey Bart situation so they are being a bit tight lipped about Bailey. What is concerning to me is that Murphy seems to be the starting catcher and the league might have adjusted to Bailey. I understand that Bailey had a concussion and fatigue toward the end of last season and he has the hand injury now but it seems he does not bounce back quickly. Lack of production from Bailey might have been what prompted them to get Murphy and I think Bart might have passed Bailey on the depth chart. If there are no takers for Bart, it would make sense to put Bailey in AAA or IL to get himself healthy while Bart builds up his trade value. They have to be cautious about choosing Bailey over Bart because early 2023 Bailey was good but late 2023 Bailey was not. Also, he made a lot of errors so the only true advantage Bailey has is pitch framing.
One poster on one of the other boards proposed putting Bart on the IL with a phantom injury but I think the team is risking a grievance from the player's union if they consider that.

This makes the NL West very competitive and another Boras client got a contract much less than they wanted. Brandon Crawford was hinting at collusion but Boras was asking for six and seven year contracts for the pitchers which is too much by three to four years. By playing the waiting game, Boras botched it.

Slater and Yaz might need to get better in a hurry. The outfield depth is greater this year than last. Munguia is not on the roster but Krukow thinks he is the real deal. Also, with Matos, Fitzgerald, Ramos, etc. there are more players that are capable of stepping up. I was not happy that they re-signed both Slater and Yastrzemski. I complain about the team's lack of ethics but one thing they do not do is dump injured players, even if they are within their rights to do so. They hung on to Slater and Yaz but also Waites and Szapucki.
Slater might feel that he has a bit of a safety net because he has the most seniority on the team but he might find that his role is diminished when he returns.

Catchers (3) Patrick Bailey Joey Bart Tom Murphy
Infielders (6) Nick Ahmed Matt Chapman Thairo Estrada Tyler Fitzgerald Wilmer Flores LaMonte Wade Jr.
Outfielders/DH (5) Michael Conforto Jung Hoo Lee Austin Slater Jorge Soler Mike Yastrzemski
Right-handed pitchers (8) Camilo Doval Jordan Hicks Luke Jackson Tyler Rogers Landen Roupp Ryan Walker Logan Webb Keaton Winn
Left-handed pitchers (4) Kyle Harrison Erik Miller Taylor Rogers Blake Snell
Luciano and Matos did not make it (not my preference), Hummell and Small to the 60 day IL to make room for Ahmed and Roupp. Pablo released. Matos will be back when Yaz goes on paternity leave tomorrow. Looks like Tyler Fitzgerald is the super utility guy.

We know that opening day rosters don't need a heck of a lot
Personally, I expect the number of changes within a week as we saw in Capitol's first year when we signed that guy.I don't know where to play left field for us.Can't remember his name but he went on to have a pretty decent career so far.
He was very popular and was released about a week later.Hope you can remember his name cause I can't

Giants should trade Luciano, Matos, Ramos and Bart to try to get another veteran. They only give the young guys a chance when a veteran is injured and then send them back down to minors. They grind these young guys down in the minors till they no longer have any hope. As soon as they need another arm in the pin Bart will be traded. Ahmed will be around a couple years until another veteran is available.
