I've been thinking about our roster. I'm posting it here because I'd like your opinions, but also, I'm posting it so I can try to make sense of it myself. There are going to be a lot of moving parts in our lineup. This is not necessarily what I think the roster will be, it's a mixture of what I think it will be, and what I'd like it to be (within reason.)
Starting Pitchers: 1. Logan Webb 2. Kyle Harrison 3. Jordan Hicks 4. Tristan Beck 5. Keaton Winn
I think it's a good situation that we have Ray and Cobb on the shelf starting the season, it gives Winn and Beck their chance at showing what they can do, and if they can stick. It also gives Hicks the same opportunity, if he can't handle the workload, he can go back to the bullpen. All three of them are question marks. Of the 3, I think I have the most faith in Beck remaining there all year. When Ray and Cobb become healthy, I think there will be a greater need for Hicks in the pen.
Relievers: 6. Erik Miller 7. Luke Jackson 8. Ryan Walker 9. Sean Hjelle 10. Tyler Rogers 11. Taylor Rogers 12. Camilo Doval
I threw Hyjelle in there, but basically that spot is wide open for anyone to grab this spring.
Catchers: 13. Patrick Bailey 14. Tom Murphy
Infielders: 15. Wilmer Flores 16. Thairo Estrada 17. Marco Luciano 18. J.D. Davis 19. Casey Schmitt 20. Tyler Fitzgerald 21. LaMonte Wade Jr.
Outfielders: 22. Mike Yastrzemski 23. Jung Hoo Lee 24. Luis Matos 25. Michael Conforto 26. Austin Slater
This leaves Blake Sabol off the roster. I like Blake, but there's no room for a backup catcher and outfielder (who's not a very good backup catcher or outfielder) on the roster.
If I could make one move, I'd dump Conforto, then platoon Wade and Slater in the DH spot.
If they get Soler, I think getting rid of Conforto is then necessary.
If they get Matt Chapman, then what's the point of having J.D. Davis? I think you have to get rid of him too.
We got a backup catcher when we already had Bart and Sabol.
This is what concerns me about Farhan. He seems to always focus on upgrading a spot we don't need upgraded. Then he turns around and settles on some scrap heapers in positions we needed to be upgraded.
Thoughts?

I don't share your confidence in Beck, however.
I saw nothing that indicates he will be a decent Major League pitcher.
Lord! I hope I'm wrong!
Also, I like Winn, but his minor league numbers really are not that good.
I think there will be a greater need for Hicks in the pen. Relievers: 6. Erik Miller 7. Luke Jackson 8. Ryan Walker 9. Sean Hjelle 10. Tyler Rogers 11. Taylor Rogers 12. Camilo Doval I threw Hyjelle in there, but basically that spot is wide open for anyone to grab this spring. I find Hjelle to be an enigma.
TREMENDOUS movement on his fastball, but he pitches like "location" is a four letter word to be avoided.
IF he can harness that, he's got a LOT of potential.
In a way, SANS FASTBALL, he reminds me of Randy Johnson, the early, early years.
NO CLUE in the strike zone with his pitches. Catchers: 13. Patrick Bailey 14. Tom Murphy Infielders: 15. Wilmer Flores 16. Thairo Estrada 17. Marco Luciano 18. J.D. Davis 19. Casey Schmitt 20. Tyler Fitzgerald 21. LaMonte Wade Jr. 2 Things.
1- We do NOT need Chapman.
2-I understand why JD is still on the roster, but IF we sign Matt, he's fodder.Outfielders: 22. Mike Yastrzemski 23. Jung Hoo Lee 24. Luis Matos 25. Michael Conforto 26. Austin Slater I'd rather not see Slater as a DH. He's much too good in the outfield to waste him as the DH.
I, like you, PRAY that Conforto is moved.... but I sense he won't be.
If he stays, I'd rather see a platoon of Wade/Flores at 1B, with Flores also getting some time at 3B and DHThis leaves Blake Sabol off the roster. I like Blake, but there's no room for a backup catcher and outfielder (who's not a very good backup catcher or outfielder) on the roster. Hard NOT to like the kid, that's for sure!
But he is our modern day Marv Throneberry.
He's terrible in the OF, and even worse behind the plate.
After watching him fumble around under fly balls I almost expected to hear him say what Marv once said: "I lost it in the moon."If I could make one move, I'd dump Conforto, then platoon Wade and Slater in the DH spot. Gotta love his political rhetoric to explain it; "We're always looking for depth."
Great, GREAT post, boagie!!!!!!Thoughts?

Yes, I started putting the pieces together, thinking I was going to inject some of my own grandiose ideas, but they seemed far fetched. I decided to stick with what we know currently.
I'd like to have included Hector Ramos, but it's clear the Farhan regime gave up on him, even before his first major league appearance. If it were up to me I'd have dropped Conforto and added Ramos.
I also really like the prospect of bringing back Belt. I'd trade Wade Jr. to make room for Belt.

Boly- I'd rather not see Slater as a DH. He's much too good in the outfield to waste him as the DH.
Boagie- Slater as the DH is me assuming the outfield will be Matos, Lee and Yaz. Haven't seen Lee yet, but the scouting report indicates he's pretty good defensively. We know Matos can cover a lot of ground and Yaz is our best right fielder.
The alternative (facing a lefty) would be sitting Yaz, Slater in RF and DHing Davis, with Schmitt at 3rd.

At his age, he's not a very good hitter, and he's DEFINITE base clogger when he's on.

Remember, the person on the team who was second in SB was Michael Conforto with 4. At this stage of their careers, Belt and Wade Jr's offense was pretty similar. If the Giants use Belt as a DH, his value would be negated. Belt is close to signing with the Rangers because its close to his home and he likes the manager.

Boagie- Defense is definitely on my mind when I think Belt. You say he's not a very good hitter, yet he still probably has more power than anyone on our current roster.
Not that I think Belt is the answer to all our problems, but I'm tired of all the righty/lefty, lefty/righty matchups.
We need players who can hit righties and lefties, so they can stick in the lineup past the 4th inning and save our best bats off the bench for the end of the game. All too often last season we saw Wade Jr. and Slater coming off the bench in the 4th, 5th or 6th inning. Then with the game on the line we'd see Wisely or Villar trying to be the hero.
We need good defenders on the field most of the game too, not liabilities.
Belt gives us both of those, Wade Jr. gives us neither.

ESPN gave us a "B" on our off season moves... "San Francisco Giants: B Offseason needs: Middle-of-the-order bat, top-of-the-rotation starter Major additions: CF Jung Hoo Lee, 3B Matt Chapman, DH Jorge Soler, LHP Robbie Ray, RHP Jordan Hicks, C Tom Murphy Payroll: Down $14 million Despite failing to land Ohtani or Yamamoto, I'll give the Giants credit for pivoting and bringing in an interesting haul of players. Chapman projects as the team's best position player (which may say more about the Giants than Chapman), Soler could be the team's best hitter if he matches last season's 36 home runs (the Giants haven't had a 30-home run hitter since 2004) and Lee may end up better than either while shoring up center field. (The Giants started 10 different players there in 2023.) Murphy is a solid backup catcher, Ray is supposed to return around the All-Star break and Hicks will be tried as a starter, although there is little evidence that will work. Now if the Giants could add Blake Snell to this group, they would have the No. 2 starter they need behind Logan Webb." Here is our roster* from their site: www.espn.com/mlb/team/roster/_/name/sf/san-francisco-giants*Well done to everyone who has posted it above. Probably no need to post this but I wanted to share. I feel like this is a make or break season for both Matos and Ramos... Fingers crossed it is "make"!

The Giants have spent the second most out of all the MLB teams this offseason and grading against the 28 other clubs besides the Dodgers, I think they did okay. Grading against the Dodgers, it would be a D but grading against the rest of MLB, they would rank at about a B. The biggest addition I think is by subtraction, when they got rid of Kapler, Stripling, Wood, and Pederson. The attitudes of those four do not really mesh with the rest of the clubhouse and getting rid of some of the data driven coaches (Kai Correa, etc) will help. The way the team is set up, they expect a lot of injuries so, as I mentioned in another post, outfield and starting rotation will probably be determined by who is healthy enough to go. Luciano seems to be playing his way to Sacramento with his annual slow start so Ahmed looks like he might end up being the starter and backup infielder is between Lopez, Schmitt, and Fitzgerald. JD Davis just got placed on waivers and there are still a few weeks to go so a lot can happen.

The way the waiver system is currently set up, the Giants get salary relief if no one picks him up. They would only have to pay a prorated amount of his salary. It is possible that no other team wanted to pick him up at the arbitration salary of $6.9 million. JD stands to lose most of the $6.9 million he won in arbitration if no one claims him on waivers and then he can be signed for the major league minimum after that. As a result, when he "won" in arbitration, it may actually cost him because he would have gotten a one year deal guaranteed. The new wrinkle is that salaries determined by arbitration do not kick in until opening day. If JD is released before Opening Day, the Giants would be on the hook for salary prorated for 30 days. So, for "winning" arbitration over $350000, JD could possibly lose most of it. If he was released during the season, the Giants would be on the hook so waiving him now saves them about $6 million in CBT space. Having lost the arbitration hearing to Davis, I believe the Giants would be vindictive enough to follow through with this.
According to Cot's Contracts, the CBT threshold is $237 million and the Giants now sit a little under $29 million below the threshold and if they held on to Davis, it would have been at about $23 million. Gone are the days when you can trade someone for a bucket of balls.

Probably both. They did attempt to get a return for him but no takers. They are doing it now so they don't have to be on the hook for the arbitration salary and it allows JD a chance to hook up with someone before opening day. JD should be able to get onto a team and get more playing time as he ican become a free agent next year. Either way, JD screwed himself by winning in arbitration instead of settling for the one year guaranteed deal. Zaidi is a poor communicator and bad at roster construction but he is skilled at budgets and I would not be surprised if he had planned out this scenario for JD all along as a provision of the Chapman signing.
The savings is significant. The CBT space was $23 million before they waived JD and $29 million after waiving him. Now they have room to go after Snell or Montgomery if they choose to. However, they should not make a deal for the sake of making a deal, it has to make sense. Just because they have money to make a deal does not necessarily mean they do it. If Boras is still asking for seven year deals, that is a non-starter. However, there have been reports of Snell talking with the Dodgers about a pillow deal, in that case they need to pay attention.

Two things:
1, I am struggling with the concept they had no or few takers for JD.
Even with a couple of bad months, he hit 81 HRs and played superb defense at 3B
2-I do hope they go out and get a pitcher

The deal that was refused was JD at the $6 million contract. Its likely all the other teams felt he was not worth the $6 million. I've heard there has been interest in JD, especially from Toronto (who lost Chapman to free agency), but more toward the major league minimum so he should land somewhere, just not with the $6 million arbitration contract. No one has claimed him on waivers so he has been released. The Giants may have burned their bridges with JD. If Chapman opts out at the end of the year, JD will be hitting free agency at the same time. Hopefully Schmitt, Fitz, or Villar can step it up. The way they handled JD was not good business because he can spread the word that FZ is bad news to deal with and you never know if the Giants will need to sign someone like him next season. Zaidi is a really crappy communicator and if I were shopping for a team, having Zaidi for a GM is something significant (in a bad way) to consider.
I hope that they sign a pitcher also but not one of those Boras seven year deals. Roupp is having a good camp with a 97 mph sinker but he had a lumbar disc problem last season. Winn seems to be slated to be ready come opening day. If the youngsters start to progress, maybe they don't need to succumb to one of those stupid Boras deals or get Boras to cave towards shorter term contracts. Anything over four years, Boras wins. Anything less than four, its a loss for Boras.

They should fire Farhan how he treated Crawford and now this embarrassment with JD Davis. If this is how we treat players who do want to play for us, it's going to be harder to get anyone to come to S.F. I think the job of GM is simply beyond Farhan's capabilities.

My final manager's management style was eerily similar to Zaidi's and I think that this is what they teach in MBA 101 nowadays. My manager always liked to have closed door meetings and would not communicate with workers. Communication with the manager was usually nonexistent or mostly punitive so the method of managing is usually to create fear in everyone. The manager is usually pleasant and polite but there is always a hidden agenda. You might think that upper management would frown upon this kind of management style but as long as the manager reaches certain metric and merit goals, they are considered successful. Older guys like the ones who post on this board were not brought up this way and were taught to treat others with respect and handshakes and promises kept go a long way.
I think one reason why Zaidi was retained is that his management style resembles that of Baer. Hank Greenwald used to say that Baer would always pat people on the back and say "I hear ya, I hear ya" but was good at backstabbing people. Greenwald quit broadcasting for the Giants because of the way Baer fired Ron Fairley (fellow broadcaster at the time). Greenwald praises Magowan and Dusty Baker in his book so all the vitriol is directed at Baer. After Greenwald quit the Giants, up until he passed, he was pretty much frozen out of the Giants organization.
Baer was impressed by Zaidi's intelligence when they hired Zaidi which probably says more about Baer's intellect than Zaidi's. At any rate, when free agents state concerns about the city, I think they are just being polite. The real truth is that they probably do not want to work for an organization that stabs people in the back. If they can treat Brandon Crawford, a 12 year Forever Giant like crap, maybe the management has to quit blaming the ballpark, the city's crime, Covid, or the weather and start looking in the mirror. Crime and Covid hit every large city, not just San Francisco so no one likes to hear excuses.
I think the main cause of the organization's rot is Baer. I've been familiar with Baer ever since his days at UC Berkeley and back then, I thought he was a real d-bag for convincing Finley to have him broadcast A's games on a 10 watt radio station in 1978. I was disappointed to hear that he was one of the point persons for the new ownership group in 1992, and the latest downfall of the organization was when Magowan passed and they fired Neukom making Baer the CEO. I thought they would have been rid of him after that incident with his wife but the guy has more lives than a cat. The fight with his wife was over the contents of his cellphone and wives would only be upset by a couple of things but it seems to have blown over. Baer seems to be a guy who has a knack for being persistent and being in the right place at the right time more than smarts or skills. Goes for Zaidi, as well. Baer and Zaidi like their technology, spreadsheets, and jargon. Old school guys are more impressed with sincerity and honesty and treating everyone from the CEO down to the ticket vendor like a human being.

So it wasn't that they necessarily could not get someone for him, But they're putting them on wavers saves them more money... Yes? San Jose Mercury said that if Zaidi waited two more days to waive JD, they would have had to pay JD another half million dollars. Zaidi pushed back against any notion that the Giants did anything untoward and said that the Giants as an organization takes priority in taking care of their players. He said that they were definitely following the letter of the law. This could further damage their reputation around the league. “It is a big priority for us to take care of our players,” Zaidi said over Zoom. “Whenever we have a situation where we have a player who winds up parting ways with the organization it’s not going to be a walk in the park. There’s going to be an element of it that’s difficult because of the circumstances. But we always try to handle these circumstances professionally and to the best of our abilities.”“Everything we’ve done in this case is well within our rights as a team. I think that’s recognized; it’s very cut-and-dry in the CBA,” Zaidi said. “… We try to reach an agreement with all of our arbitration-eligible players, him included. Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn’t.
“We certainly made offers to all of our players, offers that could have been accepted. We negotiate all those deals in good faith because no matter what might happen we always prefer to get our cases done than go to hearing.”

The then 10 watt station KALX Baer broadcasted from was incredibly weak. It was a UC Berkeley station and you could barely hear it even when you were on campus. I'm not sure if anyone actually listened to one of those broadcasts. I tuned in because of the novelty but I would lose what Baer was trying to say in the static. This shows Baer's thought processes at the time. He peristantly begs Finley for a job as an Oakland A's broadcaster and ends up on a station that few people actually could hear. To make matters worse, it was an FM station and at the time, FM radios were rare compared to AM. Baer got his face on the school newspaper for this but I remember that students regarded Baer's stunt as something only a drunk frat boy would come up with. That Oakland A's team in 1978 was a really young team that did not do well but a number of players on that team would end up with good careers: Page, Langford, McCatty, Armas, North, Murphy, Keough, and Norris. That particular team had a lot of ex-Giants on it from the Vida Blue trade like Thomasson, Heaverlo, John Henry Johnson, Wirth, and Alexander not to mention Tito Fuentes was also on that team. Interesting group that did not win much. Another weird thing about the 78 team was that there was a young kid who was a batboy that served as Finley's eyes and ears. He actually became a vice president of the team. The boy had a resemblance to Hank Aaron so the boy became known as "Hammer" after Hammerin' Hank. Some of the A's players contributed money to him to start his own rap label and he eventually became MC Hammer. Finley took a chance on Hammer and actually came up with his stage name. You can't touch this!

If this is how we treat players who do want to play for us, it's going to be harder to get anyone to come to S.F. I think the job of GM is simply beyond Farhan's capabilities. This has not gone unnoticed by the players. Conforto and Slater said that JD's situation has definitely caught the attention of players and Slater said, as ex-player rep, he was getting questions about arbitration money being guaranteed or not. Giants seem to be vindictive with JD winning the arbitration case but this might be a short term win with long term consequences. Hanniford, JD's agent, seems to have screwed this up by not knowing the rules and he is really badmouthing the team. JD and Hanniford might file a grievance and it is not clear cut. From the CBA: The CBA, however, explicitly states that this (only being on the hook for $1.1m) applies to players who have “failed to exhibit sufficient skill or competitive ability.” That hardly seems to apply to Davis, who hit .248/.325/.413 with 18 home runs during the 2023 regular season and is 6-for-15 with a pair of homers this spring (.400/.471/.800).He was good enough for them to offer $6.4 million as the team's arbitration offer so he does not "fail to exhibit sufficient skill or competitive ability" . Giants' hoped for savings may not be as cut and dry as Zaidi says.

Krukow pointed out today that the JD Davis situation could have been avoided if Boras had Chapman signed a couple months earlier. The Players Union will probably be looking at the arbitration loophole and a possible signing deadline when they establish their next collective bargaining agreement.

I was confused when the said they were going to waive JD.
Then Reed explained it, and it made sense.
THEN...THEN my thoughts were: They waived JD NOW, not late in ST so he could land somewhere else before the season started.
That was a considerate thing to do.
And I still believe that was a considerate thing to do.
YES, they saved money, BUT they could have waited until late in ST to hopefully get a better offer.
Waiving him at that time basically screws the start of the season for JD.
It's not that I don't understand everyone's point, because I do.
But IMHO, what I presented is the other side of the issue
Then again... THE MESSAGE this sent to the players is not a good one.
We were hoping for an attitude change, but IMHO, THIS might negate that.
Way to go, Farhan!
Reed is right on the money. You have NO clue how to handle people.

But the issue was Chapman.

They CLEARLY were not willing to go into the season with Casey at 3B and Luciano at SS
And now, as Reed so aptly pointed out, it's a PR nightmare!
