I pulled this post from the archives, but I'm wondering if after watching Sean Anderson pitch Monday night, we can see the upside now:
If someone can show me the upside for us on this trade, OTHER THAN getting at least something for Nunez, I'd be glad to hear it.
Bottom line for me is that we got zip. Zilch. Nada.
No.
I take the back.
We got screwed.
We got hosed.
We got picked clean.
Or perhaps the upside isn't just Anderson but that the Giants also got Gregory Santos, who is still just 20 and while he hasn't pitched above short-season A ball, is believed to have at least as high a ceiling as Anderson.
Back in 2017 the argument was made that the Giants didn't get as much for Nunez as they gave up.
First of all, they shouldn't have expected to get back as much. When they traded for Eduardo, they received a season and a third of team control. When they traded him away a year later, that control was down to just a third of a season. The traded away only a quarter as much as they traded for.
But did they in fact give up more than they received? The traded southpaw starter Adelberto Mejia to get him. Mejia has struggled with injuries and for 2019 is the Twins' long reliever. I believe the Twins would trade him back to the Giants for Anderson and Santos in a Minnesota minute.
So the Giants traded only a quarter as much of Eduardo as they received, yet they may have received more -- and possibly quite a bit more -- than they gave up.
Did they really get hosed (Anderson)? Screwed (Santos)? Picked clean (the two together)?
The didn't in fact get Zip, Zilch and Nada in the trade. Those are actually now the three guys manning the Giants' beleaguered outfield. That's not literally true, of course, but it is true that a week ago most Giants fans didn't even know half the outfield (Skinny as a Reed and Ordinary Joe). I certainly didn't.
Bobby Evans didn't have a lot of great moments as Giants GM, but the Nunez trade wasn't nearly as bad as we believed. Then again, the Giants hadn't yet traded for Evan Longoria, so what did we have to compare it to?
