If someone can show me the upside for us on this trade, OTHER THAN getting at least something for Nunez, I'd be glad to hear it.
We got even less in this deal than when we traded Mays to the Mets for a nobody who never went anywhere.
Bottom line for me is that we got zip. Zilch. Nada.
No.
I take the back.
We got screwed.
We got hosed.
We got picked clean.
We got an enema, and way out here in S. California I can hear Boston management laughing their fannies off.

My take is that Nunez is a good utility player that can really hit. But without power. On the Giants he plays primarily 3rd base and RF which requires power from their position. That's obviously not Nunez.
The two received players are a kid that is #15 ranked in the Boston system, and the other a raw boned 17 year old that is burning it up with something like 3 runs given up in 30 innings in a class a level summer league.
Nunez is well liked and is in his last contract year. He stated to teammates that he would like to come back next year but also liked that he would be involved in a pennant race this year.
Panda will likely be brought up for 3rd base in what is basically a spring training like situation.
I don't post here much because the season to me is painful, but I think there is a major reason that teams like the Giants are struggling. Later on that.

Nice to hear from you, Gary. This has indeed been a tough season, but no more so than 1985. Sadly the Giants have no Will Clark or Robby Thompson to rescue them this time, but they do have a much better list of players than 32 years ago.
If the season is painful for you, I can see no better way to air out your feelings than right here. Hope you'll take advantage. You could help our board out a lot.
Apparently the Giants would like Pablo to get 40 or 50 minor league at bats before coming up. Don't know if the trade will change that. Pablo is about 30 or 40 short right now, which is probably a week to 10 days. I don't see any reason to rush him. The goal should be for him to be ready to judge once he does arrive.
I'm not gushing with optimism, but I'm more optimistic than most? Why? Kelby Tomlinson has hit the ball hard 24% of the time this season. Even though Pablo hit only .212 with the Red Sox, he hit the ball hard 40% of the time, which is significantly above average.
I think Pablo could be a decent player if he's platooned.

While looking for information on Tomlinson and Sandoval, I came across what must be the freshest top 100 prospects list around. No Giant was on the list. IIRC the last prospect list I had looked at had outfielder Brian Reynolds at #86.

I was wondering how we knew we got screwed, hosed, picked clean and received an enema before we even knew the right players, let alone anything about them. Was this a knee-jerk reaction or a carefully thought out analysis? Even now we don't know enough to evaluate the deal. We may not know for years. Oh, great. That means we have another enema to look forward to in three to five years!

Call it what you want, Roger but an UNRATED 17 year old... and a # 17 prospect?
How can you NOT say we got hosed?
I mean, what did we give up to GET Nunez, and compare that to what we got back.
Not even equal.

One would expect a quarter as much for for a third of a season of Nunez as he would for a season and a third, right? You don't think the Giants got a quarter as much for Nunez as Mejia? Mejia himself was about a C+ prospect.
We criticize our players, sometimes unjustly, yet we often think they are worth far more than they are.
How would you compare Nunez and J.D. Martinez? The Tigers got three prospects for Martinez. They received 20-year-old Sean Alcantara, a middle infielder with a career .665 OPS who is playing High A this season and was unranked going into the season.
They also received Jose King, an 18-year-old middle infielder in Rookie League ball who has a decent .800 career OPS. King was also unranked going into the season. Finally, they received 22-year-old Dawel Lugo, a shortstop with a .706 career OPS who is now in AA. As the third player mentioned in return for Martinez, think he was ranked?
J.D. Martinez has an OPS this season that is 268 points higher than Nunez's. He may have been the top position player available at the deadline. And yet based on the little I know, I'm not sure I wouldn't have taken him first among the five players traded for Martinez and Nunez.
Let's be honest here: We don't know enough about the players involved to be highly critical of the trade. Heck, the first time we brought up the players the Giants received, we had the wrong guys.
We're frustrated with the season, and for us the Giants can't really do anything right now.
