I'm beginning to get wound up by all this. I think this off-season the Giants are going to make their biggest outside free agent signing or combination of signings ever.
I would take two positions:
First, the minor league system won't provide as much as I'd like, but it will help to provide cost control by adding a handful of inexpensive players over the next few years.
Second, the free agent pool will continue to dwindle, making adding a high-level pitcher along with Chase Headley a priority.
Third, the international pool of players has surged but is about to drop off again. I would make a huge push for Moncado.
I would use this winter to cement the future. I'd be willing to leave left field somewhat open, but I want to add a high-level pitcher (Santana or one of the top three), a third baseman for the future (Chase Headley) and the international player the Giants have been working hard for at least the past two winters to add.
I wouldn't settle for less than two of the three, and I want all three. I would look to lock up Brandon Belt and would pre-spend RIGHT NOW some of the money that will be freed up a year from now. I would be budgeting special money for the international pool.
I don't know how much of that is feasible. But I hope the Giants bite off a big chunk of it. And the possibility that they might do so is why I'm so excited about this off-season.
Today is the first day of the Giants' future. Let's take advantage of it!

I'm with Randy that the Giants don't yet have enough assets for them to be comfortable in what should be an exciting window over the next five years or so. I would like to see them pick up enough assets next winter that they actually have players to trade if necessary.
And players so good they don't really need to make a trade. And depth in case of injury.
I don't know how much the Giants have to spend, but I do believe it is at LEAST as much as I was expecting. Break out the ... sparkling apple cider. We'll save the champagne for later.
