The Giants have DFA'd Francisco Peguero and catcher Johnny Monell and have signed pitchers Erik Cordier and Jose DePaula (I've never heard of either one).
Both Guillermo Moscoso and Jose Mijares have elected free agency rather than accepting minor league assignments.

Monell to the Orioles for "cash considerations".

The Orioles want Peguero too, so look for a deal in the next couple of days. I guess one team's trash is another team's treasure! Monell is a terrible catcher who can hit, so I can see a team that uses a DH willing to take a shot. I can also see Peguero useful as a backup outfielder. He's not the Giants answer in LF though, he's just not selective at the plate.

Caught in a numbers game here, with Juan Perez, Gary Brown, and the Giants looking for another right handed outfielder. Good luck to him wherever he winds up.

Roy Halladay retired after 16 seasons. Good move. I hate to see guys just hanging on. I know it's hard because the money's so good. But retire with some dignity.
HOF voted in three managers. Joe Torre, Bobby Cox, and Tony LaRussa. All deserving. Cox won the division 14 times in a row. Unbelievable. Marvin Miller didn't make it. Good. To me he's a baseball pariah.

The Giants aren't ready to admit Brown is a bust, so what I think really isn't important. But if Brown wasn't a number one pick and did what he did in 2013, do you really think he would have been promoted to the 40 man roster?

Mariners go for Hart and trade for Logan Morrison. Hart signed a one year deal for $5 million plus incentives (?!) We couldn't do better than that? Both of these players are question marks. Morrison can't seem to get past his attitude and Hart is coming off double knee surgery. I really don't think the M's helped themselves alot here.

I think they did. Signing Hart is a good move, because even if the knees are shot he can DH. As for LoMo, he has so much potential it's a good risk, although he hasn't come close to reaching it. Interestingly, these moves have made Justin Smoak and Jesus Montero expendable and Seattle is offering them around. I'm not surprised they gave up on Smoak, but it seems premature on Montero.

Morrison hasn't been much for a couple of years now, has never played more than 123 games, and has 17 homers and 72 RBI over the last two seasons. I like Hart a little better, but I wouldn't count on him to be much in the outfield. The Seattle park isn't going to help either one of these guys, their outfield defense looks suspect, and they have big surpluses at 1b and DH. One positive is that they didn't give much for either guy. Montero has PED problems, no? Plus, he isn't much of a catcher, and as of this point, not much of a hitter either. They've been trying to fix Smoak for years. He did hit 20 homers last year. I just don't see these guys as big difference makers for Seattle.

Mark -- But if Brown wasn't a number one pick and did what he did in 2013, do you really think he would have been promoted to the 40 man roster? Rog -- I understand your point here, Mark, and you're probably right. But with his speed, defense and good power for a center fielder, plus the outstanding 2011 season he had at San Jose, the Giants may well have protected him anyway. One thing about the 40-man roster is keeping the best players. Brown has played at AAA (albeit not well), so it wouldn't be a huge stretch for a team to take a flyer on him, keep him on their 25-man roster (or work out a trade), and hope that he came on strongly in a year or two. A team would be more likely to take a flyer on a guy who had played in AAA than a player who perhaps hadn't played above Class A. Allen -- I liked Peguero. He looks like he can play, but he hasn't produced. Rog -- If Francisco could develop plate control, he could indeed make a fine player. He was good defensively and was considered to have the best outfield arm in the Giants' system. But long ago I believed his poor K/BB ratio indicated that he wouldn't succeed despite his high batting averages and occasional power. The guy had the potential to be say a 4 1/2 tool player. But while they say you don't walk off the island, it helps you walk on a major league diamond. Hart can DH if the knees aren't willing, which isn't an option with the Giants. I also believe he has incentives in his contract which could net him 13 million, and I think that was a little rich for the Giants blood. Even if they matched, you could be sure Hart would have picked the Mariners, because the DH will allow him to reach those incentives a lot easier.

Depends on what the incentives are, no?
I liked Heyman's comment that the Mariners had acquired four knee surgeries in 15 minutes with Hart and LoMo.

Juan Uribe re-upped with the Dodgers. Two years/ $15 million.
Brett Tomko is pitching in the Dominican, allegedly hitting 92-94 on the gun and fishing for a ST invite.

Allen, I was talking about the incentives from Corey Hart's point of view. They're usually based on things like games played and plate appearances when you're talking about an injured player. If you're Hart, you want to sign with an AL team because the DH allows you to play even when you're not completely healthy.

Randy -- Scott Proctor was hitting 96 on the gun last Spring Rog -- I don't know what happened with Scott last year. I do see now why you thought he would beat out Chad Gaudin. Proctor did hook on briefly with the Orioles' AAA affiliate last season, but he was released on April 27th. As for Tomko, I'm going to back off my statement that I would sign him to a minor league contract. I would indeed do so if no one better were available, but I see he didn't pitch all that well last year in an INDEPENDENT league. He'd be worth keeping an eye on, since despite our feelings here, he wasn't a horrible major league starter. He certainly wasn't a good one, but his ERA+ was 92 (8% below average and perhaps 5% below the average STARTER). But looking further, he'll be 41 (!) right after next season starts. The 92-94 velocity is certainly nice, but velocity was never Brett's problem. He simply wasn't a great pitcher. Perhaps the best way I can put this is that if my scouts liked Tomko enough, I would sign him, but I would hope they had a handful of recommendations that were stronger than he. One thing I should probably mention to Allen is that Brett's career record stands at 100-103, giving an indication of how deceiving a won-loss record can be for a pitcher. Allen -- What's decieving about it? Brett wasn't a very good pitcher, and he doesn't have a very good record. Seems right on the money to me. Rog -- Let's look at the accuracy of those two statements: "Brett wasn't a very good pitcher" -- With a 4.65 ERA and a 92 career ERA+, it would be hard to argue otherwise. "He doesn't have a very good record" -- Brett's 100-103 record and .493 winning percentage would show him to be essentially an average pitcher. Brett clearly wasn't as good as his won-loss record showed. That is how Brett Tomko's won-loss record is deceiving (duh).
