I keep thinking about Mordy's comment: that almost this entire team is squeezing their butt cheeks so tightly they can't function.
It is my opinion that nothing else describes this almost two month long plunge into the toilet.
The minute they got close to the Dodgers...the minute they realized they had a legit shot at a playoff slot...the butt cheek squeeze/the great choke began.
And it has been a monumental choke at that.
To say the vets buckled under the pressure of the pennant race would be an understatement.
But the thing is, the choke began BEFORE we even hit the stretch run!
It's like, they SAW what could happen... and then were steam rolled by the pressure.
Conforto, Davis and Pederson, in particular, have been through this before.
But they crumbled like a stale graham cracker.
Flores did not.
He was hot for almost 2 months, and now, and understandably, he's cooled off.
Hanniger and Yaz now have sufficient at bats to start to hit... but they aren't.
One game for Yaz, one at bat for Mitch.
Cobb buckled as did Webb.
And I'll add Tyler Rogers to that list, too.
His last 3 or 4 outtings he's given up at least one run in each.
Even Thairo, who is a much better hitter than he's shown, has been somewhat of a disappointment.
It's not over mathematically, but with those butt cheeks squeezed so tightly, it might as well be.

A question we have a bunch of players that strike out a lot, but I think it's a matter of choking more than anything else.
Game after game after game I watch the same players swinging and missing through fastballs right over the heart of the plate. Davis tops the list, followed by conforto and yastremsky.
Not saying you're wrong, if anything it's a combination of the two. But these guys just puckered up and took a nose dive
