Let's face it: DeJong had a GREAT first game, but he is not a guy around whom you build a team.
Only once in his career has he hit above .250.
But he has a 30 HR year and a 25 HR season. He has power.
Defensively, that's another story. He can play above average to good defense at SS.
He's got an outstanding, but not Casey Schmitt, arm, with above average to good range.
He also has soft hands, as we saw last night.
But as I said, he's NOT a guy you can count on as a building block for the future.
Which brings me to Scutaro and Ross.
Both had nice careers, but nothing spectacular.
But both got hot at just the right time and provided the sparks we needed to win.
So if DeJong can do that, we'll all be happy.
Difference with THIS team is... we don't have Cain, Timmy or Bum.
We have a Vogey, in Webb, but as much as I like Cobb, he's NOT Cain, or Bum, or Timmy.
I just want to make the playoffs and GET THE KIDS that experience.
We have about a 3% chance to go very far, but I want to see them play under that pressure so that next year, and the years that follow, they have something to build upon.
Unless FZ screws up and trades the farm for Ohtani or some other superstar.

That's what I think all giant fans are praying for! I know I am! No more Donnie Waltons or other guys like that.

I see deJong kind of like the return of LaStella with good past history, not so good recent history. deJong has more power and better glove and speed but more recent history is a better predictor of the future than two or three years ago.
