"We need to get more athletic." Wasn't that the mantra as last season drew to a close.
Have we? Have we even gotten a little more athletic?
The answer is no, IMHO, at best, it's a push, athletically. and for this team, a push is a loss.
We 'heard', and I stress the word 'heard' about our pursuit of top flight free agents. But did we really, honestly, and resolutely go after the guys we needed?
I contend we did NOT.
I contend, and I will so contend to my grave, that General Lipservice (aka FZ) had an agenda; his way of doing business, and it was a model from which he would not budge!
This, it was all just vocal noise to appease the fans. and when the dust cleared he could say, "Hey. I tried my best. It just didn't work out."
Horse crap!
Yes, we made a push for Judge, yes we made a push for Correa.
But let's be honest; we had no chance for Judge, whom I didn't want in the first place. Now we apparently had a deal for Correa, whom I didn't want either, because I don't believe he was the best option out there.
I believe the primary reason Lipservice went after Judge and Correa was Fanny's in seats.
Not that Judge isn't a great player, he is; but as I've said time and time again, why in the world would he come to a team in a rebuild?
The answer is, he wouldn't and didn't.
He pursues one FA at a time.
As In General Lipservice saying..."When I get this one to sign, then I'll go after..."
He played the waiting game, as he always does... and lost again!
And by extension, so did Giant fans.
That's what I believe happened with Nimmo and likely other FA's. He doinked around, sticking to his plan. And we all know the plan; rummage around the bottom of the garbage can and see what he can find.
This off season SHOULD HAVE HAD multiple, solid, not great, but SOLID acquisitions.
Nimmo and Swanson should have topped that list.
And so here we are; condemned to last place. Or if not last place, 2nd to last.
As Sara Connor carved into that picnic table in Terminator I; "NO HOPE."
