A good team has flamethrowers with nasty stuff in late innings and we have/had Rogers, Leone, Littel, Garcia, Brebbia etc all with horrendous ERA's.. With Waites up, hopefully things will change.. We have many other premiere arms in the minors, and we better get a chance to see what they have before we end this miserable season

Be careful what you wish for. Most of the relievers have higher ERAs in second half than first half. The pen is mediocre but BOly and I think that that Kapler is rough on his use of relievers. In Philly and last year, the relievers historically have hit a wall in September. I would hate to see Kapler ruin the young arms.

Last year's success really slowed down the process of retooling the bullpen. Last year they did a decent job, but they were pitching with a lot of big leads and had an offense that picked them up regularly in the late innings. Bochy and Sabean would have seen this coming, since Farhan relies so heavily on stats these issues were only recognized after the fact.

I’ve mentioned in the past that Farhan always seemed to have a blind spot when it comes to middle relief. This was something he did with Dodgers and currently. He would take any arm like Baez and Morrow and figured the lefty-righty matchup was more important. I think they are finally learning that middle innings are important and may even be more high leverage than the 9th. If they continue to have the starter go less and less innings, middle relief by default becomes more important to bridge to the closer. The Dodgers figured it out *after* Farhan left and immediately shored up their bullpen with high leverage arms. Guys like Leone, Rogers, and the rest of the bunch won't cut it if they want to be a playoff team.
The mediocre guys like Leone are not acceptable. Last year I was pushing for Leone to be promoted but they used him far too often and inappropriately as a high leverage. When Kapler likes a guy, it’s like throwing him into a buzzsaw. The way Kapler used Leone last year and this year, he probably wore him out (as well as McGee, Castro, Santos, etc). We could have used Berroa but Farhan traded him for Walton. I fear Kapler is also wearing out Brebbia. I think the organization now realizes middle relief is a high priority and I think the way they are paying attention to things will be 1. starting pitching, 2. relievers, 3. more all around athleticism.
