Okay... Elephants don't lay eggs... but if they did, yesterday was still one more in a long line of elephant eggs laid by this team.
Why Elephant? Because management, it seems, as well as most fans, refuse to acknowledge the elephant in the room.
What is that elephant? Well, we saw it again last night Longo, Slater, Yaz, and Flores, just to name a few continue to swing completely through fastballs right down the heart of the plate.
This is not a one game, or one week, or one month problem. It has been going on for over 3 months now.
Yes, every team has swing-throughs on pitches right down the gut. But NOT to the extent that this team does.
Never in all my years following baseball have I seen anything like this.
Why Egg? Well, firstly, IF an elephant could lay an egg, it would be huge!
Last night's egg is just one of many in which this group of under achieving clods simply cannot beat mediocre to poor teams.
Just can't.
One-by-one we have watched things go wrong for this group.
One-by-one the problems domino from one area to another.
It's been the offense vs RHP for most of the year.
For a while, it was the defense.
Then it became the bullpen.
Now it's the starters.
Logan Webb is NOT the guy we saw last year. Not even close.
His command has regressed, and though he's had some good starts, down the stretch, when he was needed the most...he has mostly belly flopped.
Now to be fair, a regression of sorts is understandable, and there are many precedents I could point to.
Last year was really his first full year, and it's not unusual for a young pitcher to take a step back before flying forward.
I've seen this kind of thing before. Jack Sanford was the rookie of the year in 1957, but in 1958 he was close to horrible.
He got it fixed and became a pretty good pitcher,.
In 1964 Gaylord Perry looked like a rising star. But he took a huge step backwards in 1965. 2.75 ERA to 4.19.
But in his 3rd full season... BOOM! He became a star and never looked back.
Those are just 2 quick examples of pitchers in their 3rd full year, and it's reasonable to assume Logan can follow the same path
Now throw in Alex Wood. Normally a great guy to have on the mound after a loss.
But not down the stretch.
Not when he has been needed the most.
Personally, I cannot wait for this debacle to be over.
For me, my belief in BFF is on the line.
I said I'd give him five years, and guess what; next year is year five.
That said, I'm not holding my breath.
