Let's see if I get this; our bullpen is an embarassment... and we trade a proven closer, Rosenthal, for a minor league outfielder?
Huh?
Rosenthal was likely a week or a couple of weeks away from being ready to pitch for us.
We are desperate for bullpen help, but we move him for an OUT-FREAKING-FIELDER?
What am I missing here?

What I heard was that the Giants have three relievers in the minors that throw about as fast as Doval. I'm not seeing why they are not up now. Also, Rosenthal has not pitched in over a year so he may not be ready to go and he is off the books. Also, the two trades they made yesterday added a lot of pitching depth.

I hadn't heard this reported anywhere, Reed. I'm curious; where did you hear this?
As to Rosenthal not being ready... that's fine... but BFF keeps talking about "the Giants of the future." Though I understand the moves of Ruf and Casili, I don't see anything else that we did that addresses getting more athletic in the future. Certainly not JD!
And Rosenthal COULD have provided future depth in the pen.
From what I read, he wasn't making that much.
And finally, based upon what BFF has NOT done, like sign players of the caliber that even put us in the ballpark with LA or SD, why should we believe he'll do so this off season?
His track record says other wise.
We had ONE HOPE for something fun to watch the remainder of this year; but BFF took that away, too, basically thumbing his nose at the fans and the future.
And he wants us to BUY what he's shoveling?
Why? Why should we believe him? As I said, his history says other wise

they just signed Ken Giles to a minor league deal effectively replacing Rosenthal. Mariners still on the hook for most of his salary.

Rosenthal has been shut down again because of injury to his lat. This is supposedly a new injury unrelated to the previous injury. Counsell does not think he will return this season. I'm thinking Waites is probably the one the Giants call up when rosters expand.

boly: thumbing his nose at the fans and the future
Seems like the plan is going to be milk the three championships and the ballpark for all its worth.

From what I heard from Baggarly yesterday, they are thinking about bringing up Waites or Giles but I think there is now a rule that prohibits having too many pitchers on the roster (14 being the maximum) so the two slots probably cannot go to two pitchers. Also, if they call up Waites or Giles, they are not on the 40 man so they have to take someone off to make space for them.

Giles was released to that he could get a chance to play for a contender. Too bad they didn't waive Pederson and give him a chance, also.

I think the three relievers they are high on are Waites, Dabovich, and Marciano. Waites and Dabovich are not rule 5 eligible so we may not see them this year. Marciano will be rule 5 and is a lefty so I guess he has the best chance.
