In my lifetime, Thairo Estrada is the third important Giant I have seen get plunked on the noggin... two of whom had their careers basically ruined.
the first was Robby Thompson. After he got hit in the head he was NEVER the same at the plate.
The second was Joe Panik.
Joe played... but he was never the same hitter ever again.
Could Thairo be the third?
Man... I hope not!
Even before Will Clark said it yesterday, HIS SWING, IMHO, was/is the best swing on the team.
NO wasted start up motion with the hands.
NO crazy leg kick.
NO back elbow up which often/frequently causes a loop in the swing as the bat goes threw the hitting zone.
I think losing Thairo, for this bunch of losers, is a huge, huge blow, because, IMHO, from this group of the veterans, OUTSIDE of Flores... I just don't see the focus and/or effort needed to win.

The Giants have histroically had bad luck with concussions. When I was a boy, I remember Jim Ray Hart getting beaned by Curt Simmons and in retrospect, I think it contributed to his alcoholism. You mentioned Robby and Panik but also recently, Buster, Mike Matheny, Mike Morse, Mac Williamson, and Belt. Matheny has credited the Giants medical staff for being careful but Mac ended up suing Oracle Park in 2020 and I haven't heard what became of that lawsuit. I was ticked off at one of the Belt concussions because it was the result of Scutaro being sloppy and beaning him during infield practice and, of course, the Morse one was because of Strickland's temper tantrum.

I wasn't talking concussions, Reed, I was talking only about players I saw get plunked in the head.
I didn't know Jim Ray got hit in the head.
I knew that in, 1963, I think it was, he got hit in the collar bone and it broke.
When I was stationed at Beale AFB in the early 70's, one of the older guys I worked with was a "drinking" buddy of Jim Rays...said he simply couldn't put it down.

Jim Ray broke his collarbone against Bob Gibson. After he came back from that, he was plunked by Simmons. They think when he stood in the batters box, he dug in too deep. Really sad case because he could hit a ton but the alcohol put him out of shape.

I guess they got their stopgap. They traded Espinal for Dixon Machado who is supposed to start tonight.

Another sub .220 hitter.
We're gonna run away from the pack now, for sure!

Thanks for the info!I think it was Bill James who said that Jim Ray was the 79th greatest third baseman of all time and that he was a better hitter than 60 third basemen ranked ahead of him so it tells you how bad his defense was. Poor guy had a lot going against him because Hart's father was a bootlegger and he began drinking when he was a teenager. He put on a lot of weight in 1967 and was never the same after that.

Yeah... he was terrible on defense. So bad they tried moving him to the of.
Didn't help from what I remember.
