Farhan needs to have his eyes opened and actually SEE what is happening on the field.
You cannot and will not advance any further than the wild card with the defense we are throwing out there.
Mercedes, Flores, La Stella, Ruf.
These guys are DH's playing in the field, and to fool yourself, Farhan, into believing this team can make any type of run is ridiculous.
We have no team speed, and lack the foot speed to take the extra base, let alone steal a base!
Farhan has spent the last 3 years building a farm system so we have a strong future, but if he decides we're close and starts trading away our youth in pursuit of some "Play Off Fountain Of Youth," he's deluding himself and cheating the fans by going back on his word to build from within.
I thought the Bryant trade was a good, smart one. No one knew that Bryant would flop the way he did. But at the time...at the time, it seemed like a smart play.
Not so this year.
Farhan needs to make moves all right, but we should be mostly sellers, with Ruf and Flores being the first to go.

Rodon would bring a decent haul.

I totally agree!! I'm just not your virgium would pull that trigger.
Which is a massive shame because I don't think he wants to come back here next year, not what the way this team is played so poorly. Why should you waste this time?

Krukow said on yesterday's segment that the players are doing a lot of work, putting in the time and doing a lot of reps on defense. However, the team is so poor at defense that even if they practiced for 24/7, it would not help enough. What is alarming is that from what I am reading in the minor league blogs is that simiar things are happening in Sacramento. In a recent game, Hjelle was issuing a lot of walks, inducing ground balls, and fielders booting. Sound familiar? As far as Mercedes' error the other day, it was the first time he has ever played left field and it was unrealistic for Kapler to stick him out there and expect major league fielding.

The problem is, the guys in the minors share a lot of the same deficiencies as the players on the big club. I'm not sure whether it would be better for them to be brought up to get accustomed to the big league level or to play every day at the minor league level. I feel they would not get any takers for slow bats coming off the bench. There is no room for them on the Giants' bench and would not serve any purpose on a contending team. I'd love to get rid of Ruf, Flores, Longoria, etc but I don't think there would be any takers unless they were DFA'd and passed through waivers. Rodon and Pederson have trade value but for the rest of the team, the pitchers might be the only other tradeable pieces. The most frustrating thing to me is that it isn't a simple as getting a guy in the minors to replace the old, slow guy in the majors if the younger guy is slow and cannot field, also. The AAA guys are too much like the ML guys and the more athletic ones are still too far off. I thought Ramos at one point earlier in the season would have been an upgrade except that he seems to have gotten a little heavy himself and his average is struggling in Sac this year.

I disagree, Reed. Even Alex Karros said the other day that he could see lots of teams wanting Flores.
The guy I left off my list was Pederson. Not making a gazillion dollars, a PROVEN power track record, and a proven big time hitter.
Rodon would bring back the most, followed by Pederson and Flores.
We could over haul quite nicely just moving those three.
We'd get something for Ruf... but not that much.
As for Kids not being ready... neither is Villar. But he's playing and learning.
Put the kids on the field WITHOUT the pressure of having to make the playoffs and it's doable. And doable big time.
Look at what Arizona is doing, as well as other teams.
But I think a major issue is Farhan's ego.
If the kids fail...that's on him.
I think to save face, he'd rather fail with aging veterans.
