Once again the kids got a couple of at bats, and once again, he did NOT look over whelmed.

I agree, Boly.
I understand using options to your benefit, but treating a top prospect like this is beyond me. It makes me think Farhan's numbers guys don't believe Ramos is very good. They also don't seem like Vosler very much either.

During his last send down, he was on a hitting streak and it brought his average up to .200. They probably want him to be a bit more productive and more consistent in the PCL. The way they treat him, I'm thinking that they don't think he is a long term option.

Then again, I can't name one outfielder in their system the do like!

It seems they're pretty high on Matos, but he's one of their guys.

Problem is, we've seen this before. They're high on a guy, high on a guy, and then all of a sudden they don't like him and never gave him a chance.

All organizations talk up their guys for the sake of player confidence and to maintain trade value. If you say "we are disappointed in him", how are you going to trade them?

They like Logan Webb but if you look at the whenthegiantscometotown blog, you can see that they are struggling at every level, especially the names we are most familiar with. For rehabs: Duggar and Desclafani might be the closest and Villar and Bryce Johnson seem the hottest in AAA. Seems like the pandemic threw the whole system out of whack.

Kuiper brought up today that Ramos has used up his third option so the is getting close to the point where they cannot send him down anymore.

Options are on a yearly basis.. Not the amount of times per year.. Not sure what Kuip was referring to

There is a new rule from the latest collective bargaining agreement prohibiting teams from bringing their players up and down from the minors. They are limited to five options per year and if they exceed that, the player goes on waivers. Last year, Vosler and Estrada were optioned at least seven times and it got so bad that Vosler was called the "hotel guy". Another article says Vosler was optioned nine times but he learned how to accrue frequent flyer miles. Those two were the worst on the Giants and Sam Long was the next worst with five options. This options rule was intended to provide more player stability and Zaidi said that it does impact the decision making, even if it is only the second or third option. that may be part of the reason why we might expect one player to get called up and it ends up being another player. Having Sacramento about an hour and a half away by car can be a good thing but it can also be a bad thing if its too convenient.
What I've heard is that there were some players who hit double digits in options last season (not a Giant) and the ones who were doing it the most along with the Giants were the Dodgers, Rays, Brewers, Phillies and Astros, all of them being the most sabermetric teams. The ones that got to ten options in 2021 were relievers from the Yankees, Mets, and Dodgers. The players who were optioned back and forth did not accrue service time as fast and were often subjected to brutal travel. This rule may end up hurting a player who is at five options and the organization may opt to keep him in the minors rather than risk exposing him to waivers.

Another thing is that a player with options would be preferred over a slightly better player without options. I'm not sure why they like Donovan Walton more than Luke Williams or even Alex Blandino.

Unfortunately, Luis Gonzalez might be caught up in the next numbers crunch when Wade Jr and Duggar come off of the IL. Gonzalez is playing well enough that it might trigger a trade of an outfielder. I think the most likely scenario is Gonzalez goes down, someone gets hurt, and Gonzalez comes back up.

Kind of a surprise to hear Duggar got traded yesterday but I guess the writing was on the wall. He could not adjust to the inside fast ball. Even though he had an option left, he now gets a chance to work with Donnie Ecker in Texas. Calhoun is a local kid familiar to Zaidi and Kapler because he was drafted by the Dodgers organization. Calhoun has cleared waivers so they can stash him in Sacramento, work on his swing, and not have to add him to the 40 man roster.

The trade of Duggar has exposed some outfield defensive deficiencies. The DeSclafani game was probably lost anyway but it might have been a lot closer if Duggar was out there.
