Three more outstanding plays by Estrada tonight.
And all my years of watching baseball, I've seen some guys that are really quick at the exchange when turning two at second
Bill mazaroski was one of the fastest I've ever seen and getting the ball out of the glove and the throw off.
Then again, according to maserowski he kept his glove closed, and caught the ball on the outside of his fingers sometimes.
Estrada is a blur turning to a second base!
He is outstanding at second base! We really can't afford to have anybody else there in a close game but him for defense alone.

About a month ago he was very shaky at turning two, it's evident he's put in a lot of work to correct that. I'm still not sure if he's the best Giants second baseman I've seen, but he's certainly making a strong case for himself. If he continues his defensive gems we've seen thus far, it's likely he will prove to be the best...add Vosler at 3rd and with Belt and Crawford we could also be seeing our best defensive infield.

Second base has generally been a defensive black hole for the team going all the way back to their New York days. Thompson and Panik have won Gold Gloves and they are probably the best. Joe Morgan is probably up there, also but he didn't play for us during his prime and also not for too long. Historically, the Giants have had below average fielders at second and made up for it with above average defenders at first (Snow and Belt most recently).
Even though Duane Kuiper is familiar to us as an announcer, I don't remember him playing much. In fact, when I looked at Baseball Reference, I was surprised to find that he only started about 120 games in four years with the Giants and was an opening day starter in SF only once. He spent 2/3 of his career with Cleveland and 1/3 with the Giants and mostly as a backup. One would have thought he was a more active player based on his current iconic status as an announcer but he actually wasn't there much. I love the way he announces play by play but looking at how brief his Giants career was, its amazing that he got the job.
Fuentes is ranked near the top in range but I seem to remember that he made a lot of errors.

Based on how the Giants generally have not had good fielders at the position historically, any decent fielder at second would be slotted in the top ten but Estrada might be in the top five or so if he plays there for a longer period of time.

He was never the same after that which would explain why he never started that much

What a trade: Ed Whitson for Kuiper. Did not work well on the field but got a great announcer. Who would have thought?

In the past off season, I was thinking that the Giants might sign someone like Chris Taylor or Seiya Suzuki but so far, Estrada is outplaying both of them and playing so well that he does not have to be used as a rover.
