After an incredible 2021 season where everything went right, 2022 is quickly turning into a pile of dung.. Farhan will always have my trust, but I have to say trying to build a team on the cheap can only last so long.. We are starting to see what an injury prone, agng AAAA roster can produce.. The bullpen built on shoestrings is finally starting to show its fallacy, the starting pitching is ok but showing its lack of depth with all the Bullshit bullpen games. The lineup cant produce a clucth hit and play8ng Casali 50%of the time simply wont cut it..Season is young, but I cant see us competing with the current roster..

I wouldn't blame this solely on Zaidi, unless he's the one pulling all the strings. I think Kapler holds a lot of the blame. For instance, our bullpen has been working overtime, so we call up Hjelle and he pitches 1 inning. Why not start him and let him pitch 4 or 5 and see how he does? That seems like a no-brainer to me.

They have to get out of the Catch 22 mentality. Instead of one inning opener games, they have to stretch out guys like Long, Hjelle, and Junis otherwise the bullpen will be toast come his summer. I would reserve the opener strategy more for short term use only and not something to be doing all season. Right now, I would use Junis in DeSclafni's spot and Hjelle and Long as the next men up. I realize that the new thinking iis for teams to rely more on their bullpens for greater leverage in certain situations but there is risk of injury and ineffectiveness.

What I can see is that we all agree that the problem is Kapler in his ridiculous opener games.
He burned up the bullpen last year, and with injuries he's burning it up again this year.
As much as I like his early pinch-hitting moves, he has a massive hole in his game I think in two
One is personnel management, meaning not knowing when to rest players, and two not understanding what it's like to be a pitcher.
And if Bailey's going along with this he needs his head examined
Then again all these saber metric morons who think any change based on sabermetrics is a good thing once again need to have their head examined.

Today Junis was used how I believe is the correct way, and we win. Coincidence? Maybe.
But why can't Long or Hjelle be used in the same fashion?...That's what kind of baffles me here, if Kapler and Zaidi were asked that question I don't believe they'd have an answer.

Injuries to Jake McGee and Blake Trienen might have been the result of bullpen overuse.

Zaidi and Kapler get away with a lot of things because of the way Zaidi uses Sacramento as sort of a taxi squad. Maybe bursts of heavy use can give them good matchups in short term but I'd prefer longer outings from the starters. Its a long season and I've alluded to the fact that the bullpen needs some gas in the tank in August and September, also. The problem with a lot of new age thinking is that they always want to be the one to try something new and blow off any strategy that is old. Maybe there might have been something to the old strategy having been arouond for most of last century.

That's the same thing I've been saying. Saber metric guys, I believe they would have an answer; an answer you and I would not like. That answer being that's the way the game is going, and the numbers back up using an opener. To which I respond with a mighty horse crap! Remember, Farhan is the guy that does not say five-man notation, he says 162 starts. I could not disagree with him more! We have five strong starters when they are healthy. They may not all be Hall of Fame starters, but they're solid, and our top five are likely as good or better than the top five of any team in the national league. Just one more trend that baseball is following that I don't care

The 162 starts theory doesn't bother me, and the opener doesn't bother me that much either in certain situations...but continuing that strategy when your bullpen is gassed is just plain stupid. When you're using guys that can potentially go 5 or more innings in just one inning you're unnecessarily putting extra work on your bullpen which is already noticeably worn down. There's no excuse that makes that decision okay.

But as you and I continue to say, we are over using it. I stand by what I've been saying since Rog was on the board; keep doing it and you burn out your pen before August hits.

With DeSclafani and Cobb going down this season, they have to use bullpen games in 2 games out of the five man rotation. They should have used Junis or Long in one slot at least. I'd rather have someone eat up some innings rather than involving the whole bullpen every day. In my mind, the downfall to last season was not Wilmer Flores but when Alex Wood got COVID and then they had to resort to a lot of bullpen games. At least our previous managers knew when to use a guy to eat up innings to save the bullpen.

Also agree that Wood going down was a killer. Games we likely would have won, we didn't.

Yesterday, there was a sequence in the top of the fifth where Rodon loaded the bases and then gave up a two run single to Daza. I was expecting Kapler to pull Rodon three times, when he loaded the bases and then after the single and not to start the sixth. Kuiper said Kapler did not want to use Leone, Brebbia, Littell, or Duvol yesterday even to the point of having to use Jake McGee in low leverage situation and the use of Rodon was successful there. Rodon might have gone out to work the seventh had he not racked up 30 pitches in the first inning (got squeezed by the ump). I think that Kapler trusts Rodon to save the bullpen but I don't think he has that level of trust in the others.
