Washington State Sen. Doug Ericksen dead after battle with COVID

State Sen. Doug Ericksen, who represented Whatcom County with a strong conservative voice for more than two decades in the Legislature, has died, according to a Saturday afternoon press release from the Washington Senate Republican Caucus.
A strong supporter of former President Donald Trump, Ericksen arranged for Trump to hold a rally in Lynden during the 2016 presidential campaign.
In January 2017, Ericksen accepted a temporary appointment as communications director for Trump’s Environmental Protection Agency transition team.
Ericksen has opposed vaccine mandates and pushed the state to ease many social-distancing measures enacted to fight the new coronavirus pandemic. (He won't be opposing them any more. He's practicing extreme social distancing though.)
I love Bellingham, Washington, which is at the western border of Erickson's senate district. I think Matt can affirm how cool the lake is there. A dozen years ago I made a backup offer on a marvelous house near the lake. Would have had only one neighbor in sight and a nature park as at the back end of the property. But it was a backup offer, and I knew the original offer would likely to through. Came that close to moving to Bellingham though.
This article wasn't at all funny, but a funny thing happened to me at the office today. A tenant came in without a mask. With the present spike in COVID cases, hospitalizations and deaths, California has returned to a statewide requirement to wear masks indoors. I asked the tenant if I could get him a mask. "NO, I'm good," he replied. The exact words my wife's son would have said! I told him that the masks were required and that even though we were vaccinated, we could pass the disease on to others (such as my partner at work, who because of other medical risk hasn't been cleared by her doctor to be vaccinated).
Maybe you had to be there, but I nearly laughed when he said, "No, I'm good." Masks aren't to protect us as much as they are to protect others.
As I posted earlier today, a congressional investigation has determined we lost many unnecessary lives because of the politicization of things like mask-wearing, vaccinations and social distancing. Senator Ericksen was one of those who politicized those things, as mentioned in the article, and ultimately it cost him his life.
One could argue that he got what he deserved, but it's a tragedy nonetheless. He'll never see Lake Whatcom again. And, man, it's beautiful there. Then again, if I had moved, I never would have met my wife.
