Just about the only way the present Giants starters could block the up and coming guys would be for one of two things to happen:
First, all four starters would have to stay healthy and at least two of the young guys would have to be in position to pitch in the majors by 2023. Even if that unlikely and fortuitous event happened, the Giants could go to a six-man rotation. Especially if it happened late in the season, that could be a blessing. Or the Giants could simply trade one of their starters.
Second, all three guys would need to be ready by 2024, be joined by at least one more young pitcher, and everyone would need to stay healthy. Once again, a trade could likely break up any logjam.
But realistically, the Giants' likely addition of one or more additional starters this winter will make the present starters' blocking anyone a moot point. You know the old saying that you can't have too much pitching? I don't know the specifics, but Farhan simply isn't through here.
I don't know if the Giants can afford one without giving up too much, but the Reds have three very attractive starters in Luis Castillo, Sonny Gray and Tyler Mahle. Perhaps a more likely target would be the Orioles' John Means, who if he could solve his home run issues could be an asset. The Orioles were awful last season and need to do something.
Let me ask a question of someone like Boly who knows pitching mechanics: Which pitcher or pitchers out there do you think could have their mechanics or pitch mix improved by the Giants to become a good starter for them?
