Apparently the Giants have only $125 million of committed salary for this season, leaving them with plenty of money to spend on the season. Perhaps more money than free agents with value to sign, but having money available leaves open a couple more options.
Remember a couple of years ago when the Giants picked up a $12 million major league contract just so they could receive a good prospect in return for picking up the pact? The Angels needed money, perhaps to sign Ohtani, so they were willing to give the prospect to the Giants for freeing up the money.
And if the Giants are looking for a quicker return, sometimes trading for a player with a higher salary can cost less in prospects if the acquiring team (in this case the Giants) were to pick up the entire contract. The Giants have money available to make such a move if they are able to find the right opportunity.
Regarding 2023, it is believed the Giants have only $67 million committed. They can opt out of Evan Longoria's contract if they so choose. I believe the Giants have only Brandon Crawford, Anthony DeSclafani, Alex Wood, Alex Cobb and Tommy La Stella under long-term contract. With that much available to spend, Farhan might be willing to take on a little more risk. Hopefully he'll be looking for deals to enable the Giants to become the best team in the majors, although the young players will likely need to become fairly well established in order to make that a reality.
It likely won't be too long before the Giants have changed over their entire infield, although the two Brandon's certainly didn't indicate last season that they were ready to go quietly. The long-term changes to position players likely is beginning this year with Joey Bart. It's good that the Giants have so many fine prospects, since there soon should be room for many of them.
The Giants' excellence last season may have been built in fair part by overachievers, and the Giants may not know how long they can count on that overachievement. One key to future success will be to see how well the improvements the Giants' coaching staff helped the players make holds up over time.
