We've certainly heard our share of complaints about what the Giants have (and haven't) done this winter, but we've received few ideas.
Boly suggested signing Marcus Stroman, and while at first I was opposed, I came around and would probably have been willing to pay him 3/$71 as the Cubs did. But it was a clouded call, since Marcus hasn't been viewed as a #1 (although one could make an argument for it). If one is going to pay a guy nearly $24 million a season and do so for three years, doesn't one want him to be a #1? The Giants paid half that much for Anthony DeSclafani and got a clear #2 who probably himself pitched at the level of a #1 last season (as one could argue that Stroman has for each of the past two full seasons).
Baseball-Reference projects Stroman at a 3.42 ERA over 150 innings this upcoming season. It projects DeSclafani at 3.85 over 152 innings. Fan Graphs projects Marcus at 4.09 over 188 innings and Anthony at 4.17 over 175 innings. Which pitcher sounds like the better bargain given that Marcus will be making twice as much?
Let's suppose that Stroman does become a clear #1. He has an opt-out in his contract after two years, so if he does really well, chances are he'll no longer be a Cub after two seasons. The Giants have DeSclafani wrapped up for three full seasons.
Do we truly think that Marcus is enough better than Anthony that we would have rather the Giants had signed Marcus? I think our biggest problem in this comparison is that we're underrating DeSclafani.
Yes, I would have liked to see the Giants sign Marcus, but let's see what Mr. Zaidi has in mind as an alternate plan.
I guess I should credit Boly for his idea of signing Stroman. But I wish we could improve our ratio of ideas to complaints. Mr. Zaidi has mentioned the trade market, so perhaps once we have baseball again, we'll see movement in that area.
Hey, we're all anxious. But when was the last time Mr. Zaidi let us down? In retrospect, I wish the Giants hadn't made the Kris Bryant trade, but in doing so, they gave themselves a better shot at winning it all in 2021 and also might have given themselves the inside track to re-signing Bryant as a free agent. Unfortunately he didn't come through in his time as a Giant, but they also gave up less for him than observers were expecting. Joey Bart had been floated around in trade talks for Bryant. That very likely would have been a mistake.
It floats through my mind from time to time that if Bryant's price dropped enough, the Giants might still be interested as a Plan B or C, but I doubt very much it will drop that far. Mr. Zaidi was surprisingly outspoken about his desire to head in other directions before prioritizing Bryant.
