The Mets are signing Starling Marte for 4/$78 million. That seems a little rich. Marte has been valued by Fan Graphs at $107 million over the past four seasons, with $44 million of that coming last season, the best of his career. Starling had a .372 Batting Average on Balls In Play last season, a figure he's unlikely to repeat. That said, his career high was .380 in 2016, and his career mark is .344. But as he ages, he seems unlikely to keep up with last season.
Marte seems like he would have fit nicely on the field with the Giants, but I'm not sad they didn't sign him at this price. It will be intriguing to watch how the next four seasons go for him. If I put the over/under on his Fan Graphs performance the next four seasons at 4/$65, would we take the over or under? Prior to 2021, Starling's past four seasons were valued at $76 million, which is very close to what he signed for this time. Those were his age 28 through age 31 seasons.
I guess as it stands now, the Giants would have a platoon of Duggar and Slater. Perhaps Heliot Ramos enters the mix. Maybe Luis Matos as early as sometime in 2023. I'm excited for the time when Matos makes it.
And I'll be excited when the Giants finalize their signing of Alex Wood. And DELIGHTED if they could add Robbie Ray and Alex Cobb.
