The two free agents with compensation picks attached that I would most consider are Robbie Ray and Trevor Story. One is coming off his breakout season, while the other is coming off a downer.
The only thing that prevented the 30-year-old Ray from previously reaching success was his lack of control. This year he found it, limited the opposition to two and a half walks per nine and won the Cy Young Award.
Story struggled, but unless there is an unfixable flaw, why not sign him while his value is down? Story has power, he can steal bases, and he's been a fine defender (although that isn't as clear after last season). The Giants don't need a shortstop, of course, but he could play second base the next two years, and depending on how things work out, play second, third or short thereafter.
Fan Graphs' median crowdsource contract for Ray is 4/$72, and at that price, I think he could be a steal. They project the 29-year-old Story at 6/$150, which I think could provide value. Over his first six seasons, Story has been valued at $173 million, and prices seem likely to continue to escalate in the future. Story has remained relatively healthy over his career.
Freddie Freeman intrigues the heck out of me but doesn't fit quite as well with Belt onboard, and if Max Scherzer could be had over fewer than four seasons, he does as well -- assuming he's healthy.
But if the Giants were able to sign Ray and Story, I think they'd be off to a fine start. Especially Ray, whom I might make my number one target.
After looking a little closer at Story, I'm cooling on him a bit. You just can't cool me down on Freeman, but would he fit with Belt? If the Giants could somehow sign Freeman, I'd be willing to trade Brandon. Or I'd be willing to try Freddie some at second or third base for a year until the universal DH goes into effect. Freddie is a flat-out stud, and the 32-year-old is projected at 5/$125. Color me intrigued!
