Different sport, but I found this a nice, well-rounded description of a good coach/manager, as stated by the Warriors' Kevon Looney about Steve Kerr:


"A great coach to me installs discipline in his players but also gives them enough rope to give them that confidence."

He probably meant "instills," not "installs," but hey, he went to UCLA not Cal. Actually, UCLA is a great school too, and I don't think Kevon went there too long. Kevon is a great example though of a player whose whole is far more than the sum of his parts.

In baseball, we talk about a TEAM, such as this year's Giants, being more than the sum of its parts, but does it also have PLAYERS who are more than the sum of their parts, as is the case in basketball? I think that perhaps because baseball is a far simpler game, that may not be the case.

I think there are sometimes baseball players who are underrated, such as Brandon Belt used to be, but especially now that we are giving more credit to a player's defense, I'm not sure the "sum is greater than the parts" applies.

A player's contribution to team chemistry might make him greater than the sum of his parts.
