Here we are in the second inning and we're already seeing what I did not want Kevin gausman starting game 1.
Pretty much everything he's throwing is up, and has been since the first inning.
It is still early in the game, but Gausman is showing what I said he was, someone not to be trusted in big games.
It's still early, but I do not like what I am seeing. And having to score two runs against Julio Urias is not going to be easy.

They made Gausman grind last night. That was the game plan. Don't swing if too high (fastball). Don;t swing if too low (split).

But my problem with him... again(!) was that, once again against LA he didn't have his good stuff, or even average stuff, nor very good command.
This is the 4th time he's faced them and not having decent stuff all 4 times is troubling for me.
For a guy who, for most of the season was considered our "ace" that is simply not acceptable.
As I've pointed out dozens of times on the board, an "ace" steps up in the big games.
Saturday was his biggest game for us, and once again, he didn't step up... he stepped sideways.
IF...and I mean IF we re sign him, I don't want to see him at the top of our rotation next year.
At best he's a #2, more likely the # 3 guy.
In free agency we should be able to spend our "big bucks" on someone much, much better.

After the first couple of innings, he appeared to settle down. Unfortunately, that affected Leone badly as Leone had to get up two more times. Krukow said this morning that with a guy having his first playoff experience, he has to go after his first warmup otherwise he might be suceptible to jitters.

I'm not sure if we can spend the "big bucks" on someone much better, to be honest. This year's class of free agent starting pitchers is pretty thin. We're talking about a lot of older guys such as Greinke, Verlander, Scherzer. The best of the age 30 guys are Stroman, Ray, and Gausman unless they want to take a risk on Syndergaard. I'm thinking the Dodgers and Padres will be in the market for at least one FA starter as well. Unless someone from the minors steps up, we will need to find someone to replace Cueto and DeSclafani, also. Unfortunately, this means we will likely see them re-sign Gausman and whoever Bannister & Co can work on.

Personally, if they're going to be forking out big bucks to the likes of Greinki, I'd just as soon pass.
Cueto I don't want back, unless we have no other options.
The guy I'd love to get is Stroman.
I'd also like to resign Wood and Desclafani, but I'm a little iffy on DesClafani.
For me, a solid rotation would be:
Webb Stroman Gausman Wood/DesClafani DesClafani/Wood
I would like to think we could do much better.... but I'm not sure we could.
We're going to be waiting at least one more season for our minor league kids to be ready.

I posted something very similar yesterday when I said Kapler "Alou-ed" Leone.
Got him up too often before using him.

They probably will, once you blow it in a playoff game you don't often get another chance in a high leverage situation.
