I really wanted Kris Bryant on the Giants, but the more I watch him play defense, whether it's at third base or in the Outfield, I'm beginning to realize he's a defensive liability!
That miscommunication by Austin Slater and Bryant on that fly ball in my opinion rests on Kris Bryant, because he has to give way to the center fielder, and he did not.
He might love playing The Outfield, but based upon the flyball I think he misjudged the other day, and a few other place I've seen him not making the Outfield, he's not very good at it.
I guess the argument could be made that his flexibility overrides his defensive shortcomings, but I'm having real second thoughts about him.

Slater should have been calling for it, from the replay I couldn't tell if he was or not, so I can't pass judgement on either player. If he was calling for it, then Bryant should have backed off. If Slater didn't call for it then he should have given way to Bryant, because from the replay it looked to me like Bryant was calling for it. Either way, colliding in the outfield like that and dropping the ball is uncalled for..bum dum tiss. Thank you, I'll be here all night.
This sloppy defense is something we never saw from the 2010-2014 teams. As I was saying in a different post, this team needs to tighten up their defense because it doesn't look like the defense of a Championship team.

Slater said yesterday that he should have been calling for it. As the play developed, he made eye contact with Bryant and thought that was enough.

I agree, Mordy, it was a good road trip. Our offense with some weak pitching from the Rockies and Cubs allowed us to take all 6 games. But I'm worried about the post-season, where we'll be facing good pitching. Those miscues on defense would cost us the game against the Brewers and Braves, and probably the Dodgers too. Errors will happen obviously, but ours are more mental and recently seem to be happening at the worst times.

On KNBR today, Kuiper was saying that living by the long ball is great but RISP and getting guys in from third needs work.

Lately, they've been doing a very good job.

I AM concerned!
Now I understand why Chicago began playing him in the OF more and more.
He can catch the ball just fine... but the throws?
His misses are little league stuff.
Tell you what else I'm sick of: Him hitting when NO ONE is on, and having crappy at bat after crappy at bat when there's an RBI to be had.
Until I had a chance to see him play every day, I was a big fan.
Now, for me, unless things change and change soon, the luster has worn off of this guy

He has definitely not been a Gold Glove third baseman and it seems his offense has been trending downward since his MVP year. I wonder if the league figured him out in 2017 and he did not counter-adjust. Baseball reference says earlier in his career, the most similar hitter was Thome but now he's more like George Springer. So, looking forward, expectations are for a .260 hitter who hits about 25-30 homers unless the coaching staff can figure him out. Prroblem is, with Boras as his agent, he will want to be paid like Kris Bryant and not like George Springer.

Not sure if he'd listen but he would likely benefit a LOT from what our coaches are preaching.
His power is nice...but with his shabby to mediocre defense, and him not being good with RISP, I'm not sure any longer if it's worth keeping him.
Consider this:
In the last 2 seasons, and admittedly, 2020 he was hurt, with 2 outs and RISP he's hit:
.247 and .178
This after being as high as .281 in 2017 and .272 in 2018.
Not a good trend.
He needs to make some serious adjustments to make me want him back.
Then again...25 HRs in nothing to spit at.

I think he’s worth keeping only if he buys in to what our coaching staff says. If he doesn’t want to listen, then I won’t mind if he goes.

Reed, my thoughts exactly!
But I'm guessing he's likely to buy in especially with the recommendations of Posey, Crawford and Belt, and what it's done for them.

Boly, Bryant doesnt seem to be a clutch hitter as you noted.. Def not worth premium money as a FA.. Hope Farhan sees this too.. He has 17 games ir so to show us his worth because to date, even though he has hit about 7hrs for us, he hasnt showed me shit unless errors, too many steikeouts and and meaningless HR's count for shit

To me, the red flag is that he seems to have had a couple of big seasons in 2016 and 2017 and its been a gradual decline since In 2019, he had the lowest fielding percentage of all major league third basemen so its not like we were getting a gold glove 3B. At that time, the Cubs were a sabermetric team so its not like Giants'sabermetics (fielding shifts, launch angles, etc) is new stuff for him.
After he had that MVP season, he was considered one of the elite players just behind Trout and Altuve but based on what we've seen in SF, definitely not. Like I said before, if he is open to making adjustments with our coaching staff, he is worth keeping at the right price. if I'm Farhan, in addition to looking at what Bryant is doing on the field, I'm looking at how he interacts with the rest of the players and the staff. If he looks like he's working to try new things or seems receptive to input, then he might be worth splurging on. If he's taking BP on his own and blowing off advice, then he can walk. Bryant has a lot of natural talent and if he chooses to work and make adjustments, I think he can work his way up to being a top player but I'm not so sure if he's just going to choose to cruise on his physical abilities. If we get something like the old Kris Bryant, its worth it but the current version can go elsewhere.

With Boras as agent, we are likely looking at average salary of $25-30mil per and at a minimum of three years. Somehow, I think he's going to wind up back in Chicago and this is money that is better spent elsewhere. If he wants five years, then its a no.

Not that I want the Giants to sign Bryant..but based on unloading all their big names at the trade deadline I'd imagine the Cubs want to rebuild, rather than sign 30 year olds to big contracts. I could be wrong.

This is going to be an interesting story to follow, boagie, as I believe what you are suggesting is the likely narrative.
Thing is, Bryant has been so outspoken about loving the Giants and the city. That may throw a monkey wrench into the deal.
But the money Boras is likely to ask, I'm with you; blow it out your pie hole, Scott!
