It's certainly not over by any stretch of the imagination... but to quote a Paul Simon song: "...I can see the writing on the wall..."
By that I mean, instead of getting healthy players back, we continue to lose players!
Not just to Covid, Wood and Solano, but to inexplicable injuries.
La Stella and Cueto and last night, apparently, Flores
Add to that we have guys we are counting on either slumping (Crawford and Posey), or simply not playing up to their norms(Yaz, Dickerson, Slater)
Any way you cut this cake, it doesn't look good.
And for everyone hoping to get Wood back in 2 or 3 weeks, don't count on it.
Reports say he's in a bad way with Covid.
Having had A brutal case of Covid myself last December, I can speak with first hand knowledge.
I had 2 gruesome weeks of head congestion that had me up 2 to 3 times every night, standing in a hot, steamy shower just to clear the snot out of my head.
I felt terrible, and was in such bad shape I didn't think I would survive.
That was followed by 2+ weeks of non-barfing nausea that incapacitated me. To give you an idea of just how bad it was, picture being sea sick for 2 plus weeks.
They prescribed anti-nausea medicine, but it was only marginally effective.
It took me almost 2 full months to recover to an 80ish% level.
So when I hear Alex isn't doing well, it sounds all too similar to what I went through.
My personal opinion is that he's likely done until the end of September at the earliest.
I don't know what Gausman's problem is, and frankly, I no longer care what it is.
He's expected to pitch and pitch well, and if he physically, can't, if it's a hip issue, say so, and don't leave the fans in limbo.
As to DesClafani, it's his right, push-off, ankle, and those don't heal very quickly.
It's a safe bet to assume he won't be anywhere near 100% for the remainder of the season.
So sure, we'll make the playoffs, but unless Webb can miraculously pitch every game, we're gone in the 1st round.
Our hitters continue to grind and give pretty good at bats... but if your starters aren't available, or can't be counted on for 6 + good innings... as Paul Simon sings, "I can see the writing on the wall...
We need a miracle, that's for sure, I just don't see where it could come from.
