I don't care what the reason is, I don't care about swing changes, percentages of pitches in particular counts, I don't care. I am sick and tired of our players taking strike three right down the middle of the plate.
I don't care what the year is, what the decade is, what the century is. I don't care what the hitting philosophy is taking strike 3 repeatedly down the center of the plate is unacceptable and has to stop!
And no excuse the kapler gives me, that my crew cab gives me, that anyone gives me is going to change my opinion. Swing the damn bat with two strikes on you and a hittable pitch coming.

I heard that this is a problem throughout baseball, not just us. Might be a case of too much information.

I think the prevalent opinion back in the day was guess until you had two strikes on you then shorten up and protect the plate, but now it’s guess all the way through, and if you strike out you strike out. And striking out sure is preferable than hitting into a DP! Considering the Giants just bombed two excellent pitchers in Walker Buehler and Kyle Freeland, I’m going to give them the benefit of the doubt for now.

From the way I understand it, there is a "book" on all the pitchers' tendencies. When the pitchers go against the book or thrown up something unexpected, the hitters freeze up. I guess the strategy works for the most past because we are always among the leaders in homers but they need to occasionally go against the shift or make better educated guesses to keep the defense honest.

I noticed the Giants were aggressive against Buehler, I don't know if that was the game plan or if they just liked what they saw early in the count. Whatever it was, it worked.

Worked out quite nicely for us!

Dave Flemming had another take on the Dodger pitchers. He noticed that spin rate dropped dramatically for Dodger pitchers when they started checking for foreign substances. He said that Walker Buehler's rate dropped about 10%. Also, Sports Illustrated said that the Dodger pitchers had the highest increase in spin rate from 2020 to early 2021. I seem to remember that they singled out Clayton Keshaw as one of the pitchers. At any rate, Flemming thinks that was why the Dodgers were beating down the Giants so badly in the earlier part of the year but not in the second half.
This is one of those things that bug me about the Dodgers. They have a very talented team and they don't need to use spider-tack. They did a lot of finger pointing at the Astros for their trash can scheme but they don't seem to be all that innocent themselves. In fact, there are rumors that they had a similar scheme to the Astros in 2017 but did not get caught.

It's my opinion that Dave Flemming was/is very perceptive, and from what I can tell in my cursory searching... he is likely one of very, very few to point this out.
I also like that he pointed out how Darvish's effectiveness immediately declined after the Spider Tack decision came out.
Thanks for posting this.

About half our rotation dropped off significantly since they started checking for substances too, and we've been back and forth with the Dodgers all season, we didn't just recently find a way to beat them.
I like Dave Flemming, the Giants fans have a sentimental attachment to Kruk and Kuip, but Flemming is probably the best announcer we have. But whether it's true or not, Flemming shouldn't have said what he said. It was out of character for Flemming, and I expect better from him. The lack of professionalism aside, You don't want to wake up Los Angeles and give them extra incentive to beat us in the post-season.

I don't have access to spin rate information but I'm guessing that its contributing to the drop offs of Gausman and Desclafani.

Actually, Dodger fan blogs pointed out as early as this past June that the Dodger spin rates were down after the crackdown so this is not new news. They also noted that the team with the biggest decrease in spin rate from 2020 to 2021 was the Reds. The blogs attributed that decrease to Trevor Bauer leaving the Reds. To be honest, the foreign substance crackdown probably did not hurt the Dodgers much since the W-L and ERA before and after is not statistically significant but Giants hitters seem to have been helped.
