... No doubt in my mind. He was an all-star before the "roid era". And he faced pitchers that were on steroids as well. At one stage insiders said that some 35% and up used that stuff. Some pitchers went into the hall based on the dead ball era where the league batting average was horrible for years. Some went into it despite less than acceptable behavior and that included Ty Cobb, a known racist, much worse than anything attributed to Bonds.
And Barry hardly got his numbers by playing in a bandbox stadium. He played in an acknowledged tough place to hit home runs. That fact is not even considered. One year he was walked intentionally twice as often as he struck out. That's at-bats taken away from him.
I'm a Mays fan but Barry was also amazing. He was an all-star long before the talk of steroids. He was the biggest player in a an era of suspected hitters and pitchers. In the later some guys were pumped up with an added 5-8 MPH (a known Dodger reliever) on the ball. Barry was a student of the game and adjusted to everything. His numbers prior to the roid era were above the vast majority of those that are in the hall of fame.
I've been in all the major sports HOF and Cooperstown to me is the stodgiest of them all and is more of a museum than a celebration of the sport and its player accomplishments. Now don't get me wrong i am for free speech and free thought. In this case it just seems that with some voters its spite not thought. We fans having either feeling is not going to hurt the HOF but those that are using it as a vendetta are misusing their gift of selection IMO.
Barry Bonds is a HOFer ... not a doubt IMO. Put an asterisk by his name, but he is one of the best players ever. Without these players the hall is a joke.
