I will never, EVER understand Major League ballplayers.
Never.
Just when I think I have a grasp of what's going on, I watch something like yesterday's debacle, and get befuddled all over again.
With the Giants leading, runners on 2nd and third and with NO one out... with Chi Chi (Or, as Les Nessman would have called him, Cheye-Cheye) struggling with command, walking people, falling behind in counts and getting hit hard, all of a sudden, and I mean ALL OF A SUDDEN, (starting with the red hot Dickerson) they start chasing marginal pitches and no one else scores.
It's like they got so excited... no, so OVER EXCITED, that they almost wet their pants trying to be THE guy to drive in runs!
We have a RIGHT to expect better of professional hitters.
We do.
These were not untested kids at the plate; far from it.
These were good, to decent Major League hitters who couldn't (or refused to!) do what they were taught to do; slow it down, and get a good pitch to hit.
They know better.
If this team doesn't make the play offs, they can point to THAT part in yesterdays game as the FINAL reason why not.
They wasted another very fine performance by Gaussman, and that, is a crime.
