Based upon what I have written numerous times over the last 4 or 5 months, it should be obvious to everyone who reads this board that I simply cannot stand Kapler.
I find him to be a plastic man whose words, though he very well may be sincere, to my ears, just don't have a ring of truth to them. They sound phony; like he's reading from a script; that he's parroting Crash Davis from Bull Durham.
But, and believe me, the following is said reluctantly, IMHO, he has done a marvelous job with the team.
Marvelous.
Unlike most managers, he does not run the same 5 or 8 players out there everyday regardless of how they are doing, but instead, does what I would do; involving a large portion of his bench in almost every game every day.
An example: Flores has been a really solid bat for us, but the other day, he PH Belt for him...THAT is a move I would have made.
As Kruk and Kuip pointed out the other day, you might not start the game, but the chances of you being in it, especially if you're one of his platooned-starters, is very, very high.
Again, that is how I would do things, so obviously, I agree.
That knowing that you could be called upon at any time, keeps everyone involved, and, again, in my opinion, is one of the reasons our PH have been so bloody effective this year.
And so it is that I give him reluctant praise, but praise that, IMHO, he has earned.
We may very well, as I have predicted, fall short of the playoffs... but he's gotten them closer than I ever would have believed.
