Critical, but not this time

I don't like Kapler. I've posted that multiple times.

I think he's a terrible in-game leader, another point I've made over and over again.

But I do NOT fault him for bringing Gott in yesterday, nor do I fault him for leaving him in.

IMHO, THAT is good leadership; getting your closer back on the mound ASAP to wipe the slate clean.

I still think Kapler needs to be shown the door, which ain't going to happen any time soon, but last night, I support what he did.

Gosh Boly, I would expect something completely different from you, from anyone really. He didnt just support his closer, he sat by and watched the same guy who's vying for an important role on this team implode two nights in a row. Gott isn't a proven closer, he isn't in a position to be relied on so heavily. There's a time to stick with your guy, and a time to save the fragile mindset of a pitcher that's visibly shaken..this was definitely the latter. Gott may never be the same after such a gross mismanagement.

boagie, I supported what Kapler did based on my personal experience.

Now it's true, Kapler hasn't ever named a closer, but the his actions dictated otherwise.

In every save situation, Gott was the guy he went to.

I can't tell you how many times I've heard from pitchers, managers and coaches that when your guy gets lit up, as Gott was on Friday, the best thing to do is get him back out there asap.

Which is what Kapler did.

Please understand, it was PAINFUL for me to agree with anything Kapler does, but in this case, I contend it was the right move.

It was the move I would have made.

I didn't see Gott "visibly" shaken until after he gave up that 2nd HR.

As a pitcher, when I'm going badly, and I have had some times like that, for the manager to show confidence in my like Kapler did...well, it's worth its weight in gold.

This wasn't a bloop and a blast, blown save. He was getting lit up, and Kapler let him stay out there both times. It was a bad decision all around. And again, Gott is not Brian Wilson or Robb Nen, he's trying to find his role. I dont even think Bochy would have allowed anyone to continue after getting shelled that badly.

See now, tonight is a game in which you might stick him out there tomorrow if this was a one time thing, stick with "your guy" I get it...but not after getting absolutely shelled, especially twice..you need to recognize the different situations. Tonight (the 3rd save situation in a row) was just Gott being mentally tormented by a piss poor manager. Gott's career might be over after this and whether it's said or not, there are players who are starting to scratch their heads about these decisions, which will cause tension in the clubhouse. I was willing to give Kapler the benefit of the doubt, but now there's no doubt, he's awful.
