Cheers to those who are still reading posts here and a second one to those who recognize the Pink Floyd lyric in the subject line. I'm sorry for being away so much but it seems like I didnt miss much. With sports shut down due to the virus, life hasnt been much fun...then again my mother having a stroke and then later dying due to multiple ailments, it's been an even worse winter/spring for me. I do miss everyone, even the stats nerd. Heck I miss everything to do with sports. I hope you all are holding up as well as possible. If you want to connect please shoot me an email when you get a chance. I hope soon we can be talking ball again, even though I have no great hope for our boys anytime soon. FYI I'm still no fan of Fargeek. At least I dont have to see Bum in a snakes uniform anytime soon. I still cant believe we let him go for squadoosh. All my best to all of you until we can play ball again...

I'm with you, Randy. There are still baseball things we could be talking about.
At least they are now seriously talking about starting up the season in July. Better late than never.

The players are a big holdup to the whole thing. Some players like Blake Snell and Bryce Harper want 100% of their salary and owners are balking at that. Ballpark revenue according to Larry Baer is 60% of their income (tickets, concessions, and so forth) so 100% is not realistic. Looking back on the Bryce Harper signing circus last year, we should be really glad he wound up on the Phillies. With so much unemployment, most fans will not be sympathetic to the players. Also, the Arizona solution is non viable, especially with the heat. There's a good chance they might not play this season.
This whole situation might actually help the Giants. The contract expirations (Posey, Belt, Crawford, etc) get one year closer.

According to a recent article, the Giants figure to LOSE 188 million this season without fans coming to the ballpark. Can't remember the exact number, but the Yankees figure to lose 386 million. With those losses, those spoiled brats still want 100% of their money? Screw them! I feel so sorry for Bryce that he can't survive on the MILLIONS he's already received these past couple of years. Poor, unfortunate babies....

They should be paid, unless something like this is stated in the contract.

Boagie, I don't believe you could be any more wrong.
Covid 19 changed EVERYTHING, and virtually everywhere.
Flights no longer exist, over 100,000 small businesses no longer exist, and the revenue stream for big league clubs has dried up.
Everyone has been effected.
Everyone.
Why should the players be any different?
The Giants alone will lose over 188 million, the Yankees 380+ million
Why should owners be on the hook for what they didn't cause?
Sorry, my friend, but you're sounding like a Union-shill here.
Sorry.

Why should the players be on the hook for what they didnt cause?
A contract is a contract. It's a risk both ways. If the player over-produces the team doesn't have to pay him more if they don't want to. On the other side, If the player gets injured, he still gets his money. What's the difference if a player gets injured or a pandemic breaks out? Contracts are about guaranteed money, not money relative to the revenue a team brings in.
The players are being told they're not allowed to play on the field, yet they're still under contract with the team, they havent been released. Take away your dislike of the rich "spoiled" ballplayers, and pretend like they're all making minimum wage..just ask yourself if it's fair for a business to own you, but not to pay you. You think that's ok?

If the business has no revenue stream, and I'm talking any business here, where does that money to pay the employees come from?
IMHO, in essence, the players were "laid off," due to circumstances no one could have foreseen.
"Laid off" employees don't get paid.
And the fact that owners are rich due to other venues is moot.
One business revenue stream should not be mixed with another, so the fact that the owners have other means of income, is again, totally moot.
But the players, as usual, are unwilling to give an inch, acting like they are indentured servants.
That's not the case.
We are simply not going to agree on this, boagie, we're not.
You see things from the players perspective, I see things from the owners perspective.
