The Giants might be close to naming their new manager, as reports are coming in that they’ve begun to eliminate candidates. According to Alex Pavlovic, Ron Wotus was told he isn’t getting the job. I never thought he was a serious candidate, as a team looking to make a change rarely goes to the old manager’s right hand man, who would have the same ideas as his predecessor. Hensley Muelens is still in the mix, and even though I don’t expect him to get the job, I do think he has a chance. He definitely impressed the Yankees when he interviewed, so I’m sure he would have impressed Zaidi. And someone who learned under Bochy yet would still be very flexible should appeal to Zaidi. Plus he’s younger and can speak several different languages, including Spanish and Japanese, which means he’ll be able to communicate effectively with all his players.

Agree about Wotus; he had no chance.
Muelens? I can't believe he'd be seriously considered since he was a big part of Bochy's staff for years.
Based upon what I read, I gather that Espada is the front runner.

I like him as the new manager. Certainly successful as the Astros bench coach. Probably should have gotten the Cubs job. Interviewed twice but Ross got the job as the hometown favorite ex Cubs player.

I'm just playing Devil's advocate here, Mark, NOT disagreeing.
We hired Alonzo Powell, Astro's hitting coach when they won that first WS thinking HE could cure our anemic bats.
He didn't.
He had talent to work with in Houston, and much LESS talent in SF.
To think that another Astro coach is the answer, might be a tad too optimistic.
You still have to have the players, and we do not.

He seems like a decent candidate, but if being a good bench coach is the criteria, then why not Wotus? I could see explaining to our guys that we just wanted to go with a proven manager, but picking another bench coach from another team must be a huge slap in the face.

It's also saying we want to flush the toilet; clean out the sink; sweep the floor and start over with some new ideas and faces.
But in the end? Like you said, a slap in the face.

Are the Giants going to hire a new GM?? If so, why are they interviewing candidates for the Mgr's job without a GM?

We’ve already talked about why Wotus would not be suitable as the next Giants manager. He’s an old school type, close to 60 years old, and do Giants players rave about him like the Astros do about Espada? Not to mention the obvious here, and that’s Wotus is NOT the Giants bench coach, that’s Hensley Muelens. Last time I looked Ron Wotus was the third base coach. So according to you guys after all this recent ineptitude, the Giants should promote from within instead of going with one of the hottest young names in baseball, and not only that the one they should go with is the guy who was already demoted by the Giants to base coach? I don’t think you guys understand what the Giants are even doing. It’s time to move on from the three world championships. You can’t bask in their glory forever. This is why Zaidi was brought here in the first place. He’s looking for a young and fresh manager with new ideas who’s on the same page as him. Not a codger who’s on the same page with Casey Stengel.

Casey was an awfully good manager when he had...Mantle, Maris, Berra, Howard and some others.
Not quite the same when he ran the Mets with names like Kranepool, Stallard, and Throneberry.

Boagie- He is the 3rd base coach, but he WAS the bench coach recently and for many years, including the years in which they won 3 World Championships. And btw, he's a very good 3rd base coach as well. I'm not saying he's my first pick, but it still must be a slap in the face to not be at least considered a finalist.

He’s interviewed with other teams for their manager’s job, and never gotten it. And that was coming off world championship years with the Giants. You really expect him to get the job off of several bad to mediocre seasons? Maybe he doesn’t interview well. The Giants did him a courtesy granting him an interview and giving him a chance to wow them. He obviously didn’t. It’s the opposite of a slap in the face.
