I just read where Will Smith is up for "reliever of the year," and I can't help but wonder, how?
How in the world can he be a finalist with his terrible/awful 2nd half?
A bad batch I get. Everyone has one.
But his bad patch lasted a couple of months.

Sorry Boly, but Smith had a great year. Most likely not many relievers were as consistent through the entire season as Will. He probably won't win the award but he's definitely worthy of being a finalist

I'm kind of in the middle on this one. He had a good season, but he also choked coming off the All-Star break when the games started to matter. Is it just coincidence that his worse pitching came when we were starting to compete? I think to be considered among the best relievers you have to lock it down when the pressure is on. If you look back to 2016 when we were in another post-season push he also struggled.

As boagie and I both pointed out, Randy, Smith simply disappeared in the 2nd half of the season.
No other way to say it, and for that alone, he should not be considered as a finalist.
Here are the numbers
First 1/2 1.98 39.1 ip 21 hits 8 BB 53 K
2nd 1/2 3.72 29 ip 25 hits 13 BB 43 K

His numbers are still good in the second half, less runners on per inning, and more than a strikeout per inning. That shows you how great he was outside the poor period he had after the All-Star break. But I still think if you consider WHEN he struggled, it shows he's not the best when the games count. I'd probably put him on the lower tier of finalists.

I think Smith's excellent first half made it seem like the second half was worse than it actually was. The hot play of the team forced a huge workload in July and then he got injured. But he did give up only 12 ER in 27 post ASG appearances. Not great but also not horrible. On the whole a great season, IMO

. Smith had a very good season when Posey wasn't his catcher...there was something wrong between the two of them. If you saw the one game of this open problem, Posey came out to give Smith a hug after saving a game...Smith pushed him away and turned his back on Posey and walked away...during the rest of the season, the exchange of the two of them after a win was border line frigid.... look at Smith's stats and his ERA pitching to Posey was close to 3 times (?) more than to the other catchers.....I've said it before and I'll keep saying it...Posey is a below average catcher and has no inkling of how to call a game, give targets or throwing to second...but you so called experts put him out as the symbol of the ML … Just once I would like to see him talk to someone besides MadBum or a coach...I would like to see some consistence in his throws to second...the last two times he caught a runner at second, he threw to the right field side of second and the infielder made a great catch and tagged the runner on his legs....as Affeldt replied to a reporter who asked him about pOSEY'S GREAT CALLING PITCHES....HE LAUGHED AND SAID, "HE JUST PUTS DOWN NUMBERS UNTIL WE LIKE ONE"...NOTE Caps lock went on and I'm too lazy to change it....

I hadn't seen that "push" away, Don. When, approximately, did it occur?
You've been harder on Posey than I ever was, Don, yet most on the board think I'm a Posey hater even though I've defended his 'defensive' ability time and time again.
I disagree with you about his defense. I really do.
He looks awkward, yes, but he gets the job done.
And his foot work and throws to second are very, very good.
Maybe the only one better is Molina.

Boagie- It didn't occur, Boly. Don has a lot of crazy conspiracy theories about how everyone hates Buster.

DK ..you got the wrong guy for conspiracy theory, that's the other Donald and his buddies....I sometime wonder if you guys really watch a game ...the push away happened, and if you watched any of Smith's saves that Posey caught you would see very little warmth at the end of a game.....and a big hug when Vogt was the catcher....

This is just another addition to the list of silly, made up things you've said about Buster. You used to say nobody wanted to sit by Buster in the dugout, that was bs. Nothing you've said about Buster has amounted to anything we should consider reality. You said he's a bad defensive catcher, yet he's won a gold glove and is considered an excellent catcher by many of his peers, coaches and managers around baseball. Yet, you say he's a below average catcher that nobody likes...That's not reality Don, that's you being crazy.
