From my view things went wrong for these reasons…
1. Analytics over performance…. Hitting HRs throughout the lineup means often that Dodger games are within their reach with any swing. Swing hard looking for a certain pitch location on any count. But there are times when all the batters are swinging alike, and a good pitching staff like the Nats are actually comfortable with that and burn them. E.g. In 5 games: wins of 10-4 and 6-0. Losses of 7-3, 4-2 and 6-1. 16 runs in 2 games, 6 in three games.
2. Despite some good individual effort, team speed on defending is not above average meaning more singles drop in that should be outs or goes past the range of the fielders more so than most.
3. Dave Roberts is like Bruce Bochy in being players coaches. That can be bad in staying with a favorite pitcher like Kershaw/ Bumgarner too long, too often. But Bochy can control a bullpen better than Roberts and the latter cost them in this series.
4. The Dodgers don’t have an ace…Kershaw has his playoff problems, especially as his fast ball drops speed. And Buehler is still in progress. Ryu is really good, or really unknown at times. The rest are #4-5 starting pitches on the clubs.
5, Face it, relievers are nor forever. Whatever talent/Psyche makes them great is often gone suddenly. Very, very few relievers like Mariano Rivera.
And MLB will take an axe to the present baseball manufacturing and its easy HR for next season.

Good analysis, but being a dummy I tend to not look as deep. The hitting became a non factor because of the elite pitching they faced in Strasburg and Corbin, two of the better starters in the game, and Dave Roberts forgot a leopard can’t change his spots and relieved his ace Buehler with Choky McChokerson. Then he goes with Kelly instead of his closer Kenly Jansen. Meanwhile the Nationals are going with their closer in a tie game. One manager seemed to forget his season was on the line and one remembered.

Boagie- Kershaw pitched poorly in his start, there was no reason to bring him in for relief there.
Bochy would not have done that.
We know Kershaw has a poor post-season reputation, that's another reason not to bring him in.
The Dodgers have a good bullpen that helped them win 106 games this season, that's another reason not to bring Kershaw in for relief.
Bochy brought in Bumgarner during the 7th game of the World Series because our bullpen wasn't as good as it once was, and Bumgarner was dominating that post-season. There were MANY reasons to bring in Bumgarner, there were NO reasons to bring in Kershaw.
Yes, you can say Bochy did have some favorite players he went with often, but he would not have done what Roberts did last night. That wasn't favoritism, that was stupidity.

I agree to a certain extent, Boagie. Roberts definitely deserves the criticism, but Bochy had the Core Four and in 2010 he had Brian Wilson too! That’s a great deep bullpen. He had a good bullpen in 2014 too, but it was too early in the game to go to them so he went with his ace. He never turned to the bullpen in that game because Bum gave him no reason to. Bochy was a master manipulator in those years, but the Giants had an embarrassment of riches. It wasn’t like he was choosing between Armando Benitez and Fernando Abad.

Dodgers should have swallowed their pride and offered a kings ransom for Madbum...Same goes for the Braves..Even the Nats would have been better served with a post season big time pitcher like Madbum on their roster...You can't put enough value on pressure pitching and these teams were too cheap to pony up and go for the gold...Serves them well...Screw em all!!
