I saw that, Mark, and I was thinking the exact same thing.
Then again, I think all of us should have seen this, and the massive other changes he's going to make in the off season, coming.
He's an analytics guy, and my 'guess' is that anyone who is not on the same page is out.
And understandably so.
Any and every leader wants guys under him to be marching to the same beat. Not that they don't want differing opinions, I'm sure they do, but the thought process has to be on the same page.

These are good people, good baseball men. Men who helped us win titles. Among the fired was Andy Skeels, who managed a lot of our championship core in San Jose. I guess they wohld rather have math dorks.

These guys also haven't found much talent recently, Randy, you have made a point of reminding us of that frequently.

I feel sorry for those who lost their jobs, but let’s face it, the game has changed. Scouts don’t “beat the bushes” anymore looking for talent. All teams have advanced scouting techniques, and you can’t find some guy playing on a sandlot that nobody else knows about. MLB now even has a centralized scouting bureau that provides information to all the teams.

Its not about finding an unknown gem. It's about evaluating by sight, not by numbers

They havent done a good job evaluating by sight or numbers before this season. Our best young players on the team this year are the ones Zaidi went out and landed this season. They kept 12 of the 20, so they're not totally discrediting the guys who've been around the game longer. We've also gone from the 27th best system to the 14th in one season.

Teams are still evaluating by sight as well, Randy. And like I said there’s a centralized system for this now so you don’t need to employ as many scouts as you used to. It’s sort of like Amazon. Why leave your house instead of relaxing on your day off to go to a store, and having to stand in line when you can push a button on your computer and have it brought to you? And you have a much better selection and you can find a better price. Teams don’t have to pay a scout to fly somewhere, then pay all his expenses etc. when they can get the same information from a centralized scouting bureau while they sit in their office. I mean I’m sure they eventually watched Joey Bart for example, in person before they drafted him, but that was the last step before they already had all his information. In the old days, they would have had to fly multiple scouts out to watch him multiple times.

I also got friendly with an old pro who worked for the White Sox ( his son was an exec-. in their scouting dept....but they went thru a reorganization and he got cut down into a low position....I haven't been around these games in about five years as I have moved from my home of 50 years into new territory....---would you believe I got my driving license renewed for 5 years, of course I was only 92 when I got it....

You’re an amazing man, DK! Do you know I’ve never had a driver’s license? We didn’t have a car in the family when I was a teenager and living in NYC I never thought it necessary. My wife drives though so I have a beautiful chauffeur! Of course they still use scouts, you’re right. And not only to look at kids. They have advance scouts they send out to look at teams they’ll be playing, and they also scout other team’s players when considering trades. Good to have you back!

That is a nice story Don...unfortunately guys like Zaidi want to do away with human scouts altogether

From what I've read in interviews with Zaidi, that's just simply not true Randy. Zaidi has said multiple times that "baseball guys" will continue to have a place in the Giants organization.

Yes some were let go, but not even half of them, and of the ones that were let go we don't know if it was merely because they were "human scouts." You, yourself, have criticized the scouting and development of the Giants in recent years, perhaps they were let go because they just weren't very good at their job anymore.

I mentioned before that MLB has a centralized scouting bureau for all teams which certainly reduces the need to have a large number of scouts. Check out this passage on Marco Luciano, one of the Giants top prospects.
“Luciano is 17, and he has his first real job. Like most boys his age, he is still learning the finer points of driving and getting around on his own. He can scarf down food like a competitive eater.
But this is no ordinary teenager.
Luciano, who ranked No. 4 on MLB.com's Top 30 International Prospects list last year and is now the Giants' No. 3 prospect, slashed .322/.432/.624 with 10 home runs and 38 RBIs with 27 walks for the Giants’ orange team in 38 Arizona Rookie League games. He was promoted on Sunday to Class A Short-Season Salem-Keizer, where he is the youngest player in the Northwest League.”
As you can see here, MLB has scouted and rated the players. How many scouts do you need if they’re doing it for you? It’s a waste of money. I remember reading years ago about how the Giants had one scout for Latin America and the Yankees had 30! It’s an unfair advantage for the richer teams and this is what led to the centralized bureau.
