Here are excerpts from today's MLB Trade Rumors chat. As you can see, the Giants are drawing a lot of attention as the trade deadline approaches.
Q: What one player do you see the Braves acquiring at the deadline?
A: I'll predict they strike a deal with the Giants for multiple relievers.
Which ones? Shrug. Dyson is controllable and has been a closer ... Reyes is cheap and controllable ... obviously the lefty rentals (Smith and Watson) could make sense.
Poll: Will Giants deal ALL of Bumgarner, Watson, Dyson, Smith?
Yes (55.1% | 293 votes)
No (44.9% | 239 votes)
Total Votes: 532
Q: As a Braves fan, I’m not sure I want Bumgarner. Velocity is down and seems like a bummer to be around and would ruin the “vibe of the clubhouse with the young kids” does this make me crazy??
A: Yes and no. Yes, because I don't think MadBum is really as good as he used to be and shouldn't be viewed as a top-tier starter. No, because I think most teams would LOVE to have him on their staff and in their locker room for the stretch run. Whether or not you think he can continue rising to the occasion as he has before in the postseason, he sure has been there and has never backed down.
Q: Everyone asks about Madbum and Will Smith...where will Tony Watson and Sam Dyson end up?
A: Just so hard to guess, because you can see fits all over the place.
In summary, the Giants have probably six or even seven relievers who could help contending teams. Guys like Selman and Abad should be getting their chances soon. Between AA and AAA, the 28-year-old Selman has posted a 1.38 ERA and 0.64 WHIP, striking out 66 batters in 39 innings. In the same two stops, the 33-year-old Abad has gone 1.98 and 0.99, fanning 44 in 36 frames. Selman's numbers, including a meager .115 batting average against, have been spectacular; Abad's have been quite good. Abad is probably too old for the future, but Selman isn't.
