Here is some good Giants stuff from today's MLB Trade Rumors chat:
Q: How bout that catching depth in San Francisco?
A: Yeah, it struck me as odd to acquire Murphy right after Kratz. My assumption is that they'd put in a claim on Murphy but didn't know whether they'd win it until Monday. Brewers, meanwhile, probably had an interested party or two on Kratz. San Fran didn't want to be left empty-handed to they made the Kratz deal, then ended up with both.
Q: Any chance you see Bumgarner signing an extension with the Giants in the near future? Everyone else is doing it!
A: I don't think the Giants feel they're in position to be signing extensions to aging players. I also just wouldn't want to offer Bumgarner close to what he'd ask in an extension. He's been more good than great the past two seasons, and his camp is surely still pitching him as an elite arm.
Q: Will the Giants release Melancon?
A: Melancon pitched well last year when he was healthy and is owed like $28MM more. No.
Good explanation of what likely happened with the catching situation. Right on explanation of Bumgarner's extension situation, and an equally good discussion of Melancon. The Giants are definitely overloaded with relievers, and they have Andrew Suarez to step in if they trade a starter as expected.
What did we think of Sean Anderson last night? Krukow was impressed, but of course he's impressed with about every young pitcher.
Ideas on how the roster resolves? If the Giants trade Holland, his spot would be filled by Suarez, so that doesn't open up a spot.
