Too much adrenaline in the 1st inning, but after he settled in, I was flat out impressed with Anderson.
Good velocity, good movement, very good breaking/slider stuff.
Later in the season I hope we see him in the rotation.

Are we feeling better about the Nunez trade now? Remember, Anderson was the low ceiling/high floor pitcher of the pair the Giants acquired. Gregory Santos was the hard-throwing 17-year-old ground ball pitcher the Giants picked up in the deal. I'm hoping Santos pitches for San Jose this season and that I get to see him pitch in two weeks.
Last night was the first I'd seen of Anderson aside from video. He hung a ton of breaking balls early, although the walk he issued that cost him the run could have been called strike 3. Except for the jerk at delivery, his motion seemed strong and compact a la Matt Cain. Pretty simple delivery that seems repeatable.
The Red Sox converted Anderson in to a starter, and the Giants continue the trend, although as they mentioned on the telecast, Anderson was a closer in college. He's got at least four decent pitches (started using his change up later) though, so he appears to have a starter's repertoire. He's probably in line right after Andrew Suarez.

I never had a problem with the Nunez trade because I didn't want him in the first place.

I liked the trade. Nunez was playing well but not really helping the Giants win. That's the perfect situation for using a player for trade bait.

I was not a fan of Nunez for multiple reasons, not the least of which was that he was really a utility player and not much more.
Poor on defense.
No power.

Poor on defense.
Rog -- This is part of why I am reluctant to use the eye test alone to judge defense, Boly. In 2017 you seemed to be quite pleased with Eduardo's defense, even though I had posted when he came to the Giants that he could play a lot of positions, but none of them well. In 2018 you came to realize I was right.
But in 2017 you seemed to be fooled, even as I pointed out that I believed the WAY Eduardo played some of the balls made them look more difficult than they really were and that he wasn't truly a good fielder. In fairness, I do believe he played the best defense of his life during that stretch.
Defense is truly difficult to judge, which is why I try to get as much information as I possibly can.

Do you, Rog, hate Nunez that much that you feel the need to defend punting him by making Anderson out to be the next Cy Young? Rodriguez kicked butt last year and all he gets from you is "sophomore jinx" crap. Anderson hasn't done anything in the Show and all of a sudden you're annointing him as a God.

In 2017, in the short sampling I saw, he looked okay.
But as soon as 2018 began, the holes in his defense became so apparent.

That's what makes it hard to judge players on other teams -- and thus compare the Giants' players with them. We just don't see the opponents play enough.

Just a reminder, and I guess, sort of tooting my own horn, but I was the first on this board to predict a not even close year for Rodriquez.
I referenced Russ Ortiz at the time, and also something Kruk said years ago: And I paraphrase.
"Players often have great success in their 1st year, but they fall off because they don't know how they did it. And until they learn, it's a hard road."
I think that's what we're going to see from Rodriguez.

Krukow's words make sense IF a player makes it to the show early at a young age. If it takes you a lot of work to get to the bigs, the better habits you will develop and the better chance you will have to make the adjustments when the league adjusts to you. I feel like D-Rod paid his dues and pitched enough innings in the bus leagues that he will have the necessary tools to overcome adversity. Being Pudge's son will also be a benefit. I like Derek's makeup and even though I agree he will struggle at times this year I don't believe, like Boly, that he will have a major collapse. Buster will be a big help as well.

by the way Boly...why do you toot your own horn for something that you first predicted that has not yet come to pass? If and when Derek proves right your uber negative projection, THEN you can pat yourself on the back.

I would Love Rodriguez to prove me wrong.
But history says he won't.
I love that he pitches UP in the zone so well, but I still believe he doesn't know exactly 'how' he achieved his success last year.
And until he does, he's Russ Ortiz all over again, albeit with much, MUCH better mechanics.
