As we watch other sports, we never know where we'll make a Giants spotting.
Watching the Cal/Stanford basketball game the other day, they showed some stills of when now Stanford coach Jarod Haase played his freshman year at Cal before moving on to Kansas. And there in the background was referee ... Bob Garibaldi, the Giants' territorial Bonus Baby pick from Santa Clara University in 1962.
Then yesterday Huey Lewis holed out a chip at beautiful Pebble Beach, proudly wearing his white Giants cap.
The Giants are everywhere. That's why they're called Giants.

I once saw Darrell Evans, in full uniform, roughly angling his 6 foot-7 inch frame out of his little sports car--I believe it was a Porche--at a gas station in Santa Clara. It was a pretty comical sight. My dad and I were getting snacks at the gas station market on our way to the Giants/Santa Clara U exhibition game.

That must have been a very cool sight, Bufalo Bob. Darrell was listed at 6-foot-2 though.

Im not shocked and I certainly didn't think it important enough to look up...but to a little kid watching him get out of a tiny sports car, he sure looked closer to 6-7

It isn't at all unreasonable that Darrell would seem bigger than life to a kid. When we're kids, adults ARE much bigger than our lives. And the sports car only emphasized i
The story emphasizes some important points:
. Our natural inclination is to think that baseball was at its best when we were kids. The game seemed bigger than it truly was for the exact reason you mentioned -- its players were so much bigger than we were.
. Our knowledge of sports covers many facets, including proportion. I recall at about the age of six coming across a hometown player who was a guard for the Indiana University basketball team. No doubt when I saw him at age six, he seemed to me to be a giant, if not a Giant (not sure if I had become a pro baseball fan yet). But when I thought of him this morning, it seemed highly likely he was between 5-foot-10 on the small side to 6-foot-2 on the big side. And sure enough, he is listed by Indiana University at 6-foot-1. Although he probably seemed seven feet tall to me when I came across him, I didn't have to look him up to know he likely was somewhat normal-sized.
Anyway, it was a cool story, and I can see how it left a big impression on you.
