So, after this discussion about Crawford with Rog, I decided to see if I could find anything about that in past posts from years ago. I haven't found anything yet, but I did find this quote from Rog about something Randy will find very interesting...
Rog- March 30, 2012 "You have convinced me to up my opinion of Gary Brown, Randy. He is really liked by many in the scouting and analytical communities. His speed is Darren Ford-like and he has very nice pop for a leadoff hitter."
Boagie- Randy, I expect a Christmas card this year, you're welcome.

You see what happens when I'm nice to Randy?!!!! Good find though. That was back when I still thought Randy knew something. He had seen the guy play, and obviously Gary played well enough to win the Cal League Player of the Year Award. I remember writing that. I was trying to be a kinder and nicer guy and give Randy the benefit of the doubt.
I have mentioned that I too might have missed on Gary if I had been in Randy's position. Yeah, the metrics got my attention in a bit of a negative manner, but what really alerted me was that when Gary was drafted, I read a scouting report that highly questioned whether Gary would have enough patience to succeed.
Along the way you made what I thought was a great point, Boagie, when you pointed out that Brown hadn't walked in college, but he hadn't struck out either. Being a contact hitter is a positive.
But you know from playing that making contact is only part of the solution. You have to make HARD contact. As pitching improved, Gary's contact fell off, in terms of both quality and quantity.
The shame of it all is that Gary seems like a great guy, and even though he realizes it can't be as a player, he has worked extremely hard since his playing career to stay in the game. I really wish we could reverse history and somehow find a way that Gary could have succeeded.
For him, as well as the Giants.

I'm not surprised by any of this Boagie. Rog is a master of deny and deflect. I was very grateful that you dug it up. I'm actually still convinced Brown always had the talent to be a stud big leaguer...just not the desire to put in the necessary work. And he has the perfect head for bongo practice.

I dont think Gary was ever given a legitimate shot to get comfortable. I would take his defensive ability and speed in CF now.

I dont think Gary was ever given a legitimate shot to get comfortable. I would take his defensive ability and speed in CF now. Rog -- Gary began to have a harder time making contact in AA, and when he hit AAA, strikeouts became a true problem. His second season in AAA he cut back on his strikeouts, and his average went back up to where it had been in AA. But the Giants let him go, and while he was able to cut back further on his strikeouts, he never could find the ability to combine better contract with more contract. Sadly, his career played out in two independent league seasons. It seems to have gone by so quickly, but Gary turned 30 on last September 28th.
