The Giants are said to still be in on Josh Harrison, although they're now believed to be just one of half a dozen or more teams in the running. Josh is a versatile and experienced player, but IMO he's no longer good enough to make much of a difference. The best I can say about him is that the other team's interest might make him a good flip candidate.
Let me ask again: We're upset that Farhan has done little of note this offseason, but how many players have we identified that he's missed out on? I remember Anibal Sanchez and Yusei Kikuchi, but have we identified others?
A positive side note: Joey Bart is MLB.com's #1 catching prospect. Both he and Heliot Ramos are now expected to open the season in San Jose, so hopefully we'll be getting some personal scouting reports early this season. The Little Giants open their schedule April 11th against Visalia, and anyone wanting a sneak preview of both San Jose and the Sacramento Rivercats on April 2nd might want to go to San Jose Municipal Stadium at the corner of 11th Street and Alma to take in their exhibition.
Like most minor league teams, the Little Giants put on a good between-innings show. And every other inning or so you should enjoy the "beer batter," the opposing hitter deemed most likely to strike out. Beers are half price for five minutes or so after the beer batter strikes out.
While you're there, slide over to the Sharks' ice rink at 10th and Alma and see if the Sharks are practicing. They'll be approaching the Stanley Cup Playoffs by that time. They probably won't be there, but it's fun to watch the public skating, and if one of the kids' hockey teams is playing, it's a treat to watch them -- especially the Mites, who are something like seven years old or younger. The first tournament game my son played, one of his teammates was the younger son of former Giants second baseman Brad Wellman. Casey Wellman went on to play for the Minnesota Wild.
I used to enjoy watching hockey games with Brad, since unlike Randy, he actually thought I had a clue about baseball, which we would often talk during hockey practices. Brad actually thought my son was a pretty good hockey player too, and he was better than Brad's older son. But not even close to Casey.
But, hey, I hope you'll take in that game on April 2nd, Randy. You can scout BOTH the Giants and the Rivercats for us. Give us a head start on the minor league season. There should be at least half a dozen players who will be up with the Giants sometime this season, and San Jose may have that many players who wind up with the Giants at some time in the future.
