Not a huge deal, but I see the Red Sox have signed reliever Carson Smith to a minor league contract. I wish it had been the Giants.
Smith has missed almost the entire past three seasons due to injury, but he has a career 2.21 ERA, a 1.06 WHIP, 11.4 K/9, a 3.8 K/BB ratio, and a 64% ground ball rate. He's limited opposing hitters to a .198 average.
Maybe Smith's arm is gone, but if it remains intact, he could be very much a plus reliever. In his last healthy season of 2015, he had a plus fastball, a devastating slider and a serviceable change up.
