The Giants added two relatively young outfielders last week, one of waivers and one via the Rule 5 Draft. Are they now out of the outfield market, or are they just beginning? Here is what Farhan said about adding outfielders. The comment was made before the Giants drafted Drew Ferguson but after they had added Mike Gerber:
"I'd say it's a high priority," Zaidi said Monday. "It's a pretty inexperienced group, and I do expect that by Opening Day, we'll have at least a couple of additions there."
At LEAST a couple of additions. Ferguson is one, which means Farhan is planning at least one more outfield add. Should we put the over/under at 1.5 or perhaps 2.0? The Giants' outfield currently includes Steven Duggar, Austin Slater, Chris Shaw, Mac Williamson, Gerber and Ferguson. That may be a bunch of fourth or fifth outfielder and AAAA types. If one of those guys becomes an average starter, I would be delighted.
I'm hoping Farhan acquires at least TWO more outfielders. The pickings appear to be slim, but I suspect the Giants will find a few outfielders they would like to have. The question then becomes whether those players are worth the price in terms of salary and/or players.
I'm lukewarm on Avisail Garcia, but my interest in Ferguson is growing. Ferguson gets on base, and in AAA he played primarily center field, meaning he likely is the type of fielder we would like in the outfield, particularly at a corner (where, sadly, his bat is light). I see Ferguson as a fourth or fifth outfielder with a chance to become a second division starter or more likely a platoon player. Drew seems to be an AT&T-type player. The question is whether he will be good enough in that role.
Ferguson could be a complement to the left-handed hitting Duggar. The player in the present outfield group that I like best is Mac Williamson, who appears to be a low-floor, high-celing player. Because of his fielding prowess, Duggar likely has the highest floor of the group.
