To summarize, the Giants' top trade chips right now are pitchers -- Madison Bumgarner, Sam Dyson, Tony Watson, Hunter Strickland and Will Smith. Their top trade chips a year from now might be a rebounded Brandon Belt and Joe Panik, perhaps joined by a rebounded Jeff Samardzija, who may be more attractive with just one year left on his contract.
They're still in the bottom half among MLB teams in this regard, but the Giants are developing some young players who can be used in rebuilding, either to man their roster, or as trade chips.
The Giants will likely have one of the biggest position shifts in their history a year+ from now, when #2 overall draft choice and catcher Joey Bart moves future Hall of Fame catcher Buster Posey to first base. Just as the installation of Posey as the Giants catcher in 2010 helped spur a string of three World Championships in five seasons, the arrival of Bart might signal a the beginning of a new age of Giants teams.
He will likely precede the new age by a little, with the amount of time being dependent in great part by how soon the Giants rebuild. The Giants need to get better, younger and in a hurry. Youngsters such as we have been discussing -- Bart, Heliot Ramos, Melvin Adon, Shaun Anderson and Gregory Santos, etc. -- may fuel the most productive part of the rebuild.
Randy was one of the first to favor rebuilding, just two or three months after he decried the second Eduardo Nunez trade as a failed trade. Notice two of the young names on the list in the preceding paragraph -- Anderson and Santos -- came to the Giants in that trade.
It should be mentioned too that some of the young pitchers who have begun to emerge in the past two seasons -- Dereck Ramirez, Andrew Suarez, Chris Stratton, Reyes Moronta and Ty Blach -- may play a role, either as members of the staff going forward or as trade chips. Each of the pitchers made a visible contribution in 2018.
The addition of Derek Holland may aid as a transition bridge. The two players the Giants added in exchange for Andrew McCutchen -- Abiatal Avelino and Juan De Paula -- might contribute, as well.
With regard to players recently traded away, if he stays healthy, Matt Duffy will certainly be missed, and the loss of reliever Kyle could put a Crick in the bullpen by taking him out. Overall though, the Giants' trades haven't been too hurtful, other than to add to the payroll burden going forward.
