I value the Wilson Defensive Player of the Year at each position more highly than the Gold Glove Award. Brandon has won the Gold Glove each of the past three seasons (and looked poised to win it again IMO). He won the Defensive Player of the Year Award in 2016.
But what I didn't realize is that he also won the DPOY Award in 2012, a very early recognition of his defensive skills. What was highly impressive about his early winning of the award is that he got off to a very slow start in 2012. By May 12th he had eight errors, and he reached double figures later in the month.
Anyway, I'm impressed by his winning the award all the way back then. For the most part, it was 2015 when his defense first began to be noticed as among the very best in the game. He will likely win his fourth straight Gold Glove this season. The Wilson Award came three years prior to his first Gold Glove. And I hadn't realized it until just now.
Maybe the East Coast bias skipped a year in 2012!
