If yo haven't listened to this yet, you should.
There will be no rebuild. Much of the status quo is staying.
This is what Sabean did say:
1-They won't be able to get any power guys unless they trade for one, and that's not likely.
2-The MUST get a guy who can close out games. (This tells me he is NOT happy with Smith, Melancon, and Strickland closing games.)
3-They need guys who can get on base!
That's a must, he said.
4-They need to get some guys who can drive in runs.
What he's not saying here, but he said elsewhere, was guys who know how to hit with RISP, and who are gap hitters.
He very subtly said he was NOT happy with the mind set of this group of hitters.
Didn't say it in those words, but that was clearly his implication.

as to #2, I think before Strick got hurt, Sabes was fine with the closer. I still think the bully overall is ok with Smith, Moronta and Black...all three of those guys have the stuff to close. But Strick needs to find his fastball in the offseason. 93 aint gonna cut it.

He got hit and hit hard again today.
I am guessing, but I think Sabean has just about had it with a couple of players.
Strickland and Brandon Belt.
Neither has lived up to expectations, and every time Brandon appears to be having a break out season...he either suddenly goes into the tar pits... or gets hurt.
In Strickland's case, we had the Bryce Harper fiasco last year, and punching the wall this year.
Don't see him willing to tolerate much more of either.

I TOTALLY disagree with you about Strickland. He has had a stellar season up until him breaking his hand. We will see next Spring whether his stuff returns after he has time to build strength in his hand.

I'm just commenting on Sabean's comments, Randy.
A couple of years back I thought Strickland was our closer in waiting. But even prior to breaking his hand, he was NOT the kind of shut down guy that Sabean was talking about.

as to #2, I think before Strick got hurt, Sabes was fine with the closer. Rog -- After an excellent start, Hunter had begun to blow saves right before he was injured. In his first 15 save opportunities, Hunter saved 13. Good, but certainly not great. What made him look even better was that he won the two games in which he blew the saves. But on June 14th and June 18th, he blew two quick saves. It was after the second blown save that Hunter broke the water cooler (or broke something). In his tenure as closer, Hunter saved 14 games in 18 attempts, which isn't good at all. The Giants' coming back to win his first two blown saves allowed him to establish a fine reputation prior to the two blown saves and his reaction to the second. Hunter did issue an apology after breaking his hand that seemed heartfelt and unscripted by his agent. Smith experienced a similar situation in which he started out spectacularly, then stumbled, beginning with an effort in which he clearly didn't have his control or command. Counting Sam Dyson and of course Mark Melancon, the Giants now have four guys who for a fairly long period were successful as closers. Again, I disagree. I don't know what your definition of shut down is but to me he was solid and reliable. The setup wasn't always reliable but Strick was.

Hunter may not be throwing as hard since his injury, but over the season to date he's at 95 and down just a few ticks from last season. He suffered a bigger drop in velocity in 2017 than he has this year. That said, his fastball hasn't been nearly as EFFECTIVE as previously, and his change up has declined quite a bit as well.

In his last 4 or so appearances, hasn't he been scored upon in each one?
Or if not scored upon, been in a LOT of trouble?

My comments were STRICK-ly about pre-injury Strickland.

I understand they were about Strickland, Randy.
I took Sabean's comments to NOT be in support of EVERYONE who has closed for us this year.
It sounded to ME like he wants/insists upon a Rob Nen-type closer.

The Giants have four relievers who have had success as a closer, so Brian must indeed be thinking about a top closer. As we saw with Melancon though -- who WAS one of the top closers when the Giants signed him -- I think it is a mistake to give the big bucks to a top closer.
Trade for a hard-throwing reliever with the POTENTIAL to close. If that causes too much uncertainty, trade for two or three.
If I were to choose from among the four the Giants have now, I would choose Will Smith.

My impression is that, that is precisely what he was talking about, Rog.
More than once, in his dugout interview and his podcast he talked about the team's INABILITY to finish off games.
Sounds like THAT is his priority, and it's not a bad one.
Melancon, Smith and everyone else we've got certainly are NOT that guy.
