As much as the fans, and I, want the Giants to go out and get a bat, based upon how things are right now; 7-24-2018, the Giants will not.
Why?
Money aside, it's my OPINION that they believe they are GOING to add a bat. They're just going in house to get one; Evan Longoria.
Their logic is, then, IMHO, they don't need to go out and get one because they have one on the way.
I disagree with their logic, because it's faulty.
Again, IMHO, It's all part of Bobby Evan's preseason blueprint; a blueprint that hasn't worked very well, and isn't likely to unless there are some HUGE turn arounds by the likes of:
McCutchen, Longoria, Panik, and Posey
And on the mound, Bum and Cueto and Jeffy.
I'm hoping Mark's thoughts in another thread are wrong; that management is happy to just be competitive, and as long as they "appear" to be in the race, that will bring the fans, and that's just fine with them.
Sad, sad leadership if you ask me.

I think Mark may have said the Giants are SATISFIED or something like that to be a .500 team (at least for now). Not HAPPY to be a .500 team. There's a significant difference.
I agree with Boly that it doesn't seem likely the Giants will add a lot. I think finding a decent controllable outfield bat would make the most sense. Based on what they have right now, the Giants appear to be relying for next season on Hernandez, Duggar, Shaw and Slater in the outfield. It would be nice to go into 2019 with two more outfield bats than that. Maybe one now and one over the winter.
But I'm not sure the Giants have the wherewithal to pick up a decent, controllable outfielder without giving up more than they wish. One player that Mark mentioned but not highly in the least might be Billy Hamilton. That would give the Giants a lot of outfield speed, but Billy has had a very hard time getting on base, even though he's a wonderful base stealer once he gets there.
The Giants might be able to pick Hamilton up or as little as one of their young starters, but the Reds are developing a good, young rotation already. They already have a very nice pitching prospect in 25-year-old Robert Stephenson of Martinez. Stephenson hasn't been good in tries with the Reds part of the past two seasons, but this year in AAA he has given up only 70 hits in 93 innings while striking out 114.
Hamilton doesn't seem to be what they need, and he doesn't necessarily seem to be what they could get. In addition, he's controllable for only one more season. Hamilton fits the old adage that you can't steal first base.

Why in the world would we want Billy Hamilton?
That's almost, but not quite, as Heyman's article that the Giants want to RE ACQUIRE Austin Jackson!
That's ridiculous!
Why would they even consider getting that putz back?

The Giants almost certainly DON'T want Billy -- although they did over the winter. I merely used him as an example that Mark I believe it was brought up in a negative -- not positive -- manner to show that the Giants likely couldn't even work out a deal for HAMILTON. Perhaps you missed the part where I said, "I agree with Boly that it doesn't seem likely the Giants will add a lot." As for Jackson, I understand Heyman's thinking. The Giants like veterans, and it's always nice to get a guy back for free. I could see the Giants taking Austin back if Austin would play in the minors. But I thought Heyman was off base on this one.
