Statistics have gotten a lot more sophisticated lately, of course, but it used to be that you looked for a hitter who could hit 30 homers, score 100 runs and drive in 100. The 30 homers was a good measure, but runs scored and RBI's are team-dependent stats.
There is a good Giants-related illustration of that fact this year. I think we would all agree that while he's slumped off lately, Brandon Crawford has had a very nice season thus far with the bat. But you know who has more runs scored and RBI's than Brandon? Our old friend Denard Span.
Team-dependent stats can be confusing. You can count on it.
